something i came across …

Quote:
Goodbye to our England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's just fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and even the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected, staff do as they're told
They must not teach our children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them much anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings , Arnhem or Mons ?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is 21 miles away, over the sea
We're the English from England, land of the free
So let's Stand up and all Shout for a reprieve.

Let's tell our Government, Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
I’ll fly the cross of Saint George or the flag of our Union
to Let the world know we are still English, through and true …

Sorry but I cannot resist.

So what is the English National Anthem ? ;)

Runs and hides quickly.

Edit: I hasten to add I agree the English don't seem to shout about it much.

I don't suppose anyone thought we'd need one. How about "I Vow to Thee My Country"?

Quote:
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love:
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

To the tune of Nimrod, of course.

So why to the "English" insist on using the "British" national anthem for all their English events e.g. sports. :roll:

Some of us preferred it when we used "Land of Hope and Glory".

"Jerusalem" is used in Cricket AFAIK, even if that is the England and Wales Cricket Team.

I suppose the National Anthem was used because England conquered Scotland and Wales and imposed a Monarchy based anthem.

Land of Hope and Glory for me though.

How do we define English then ,I know we've had this before over at the old place but hey we can start again,
are you English by birthright or because you can trace your family name back a few generations ,mine goes back to a king in cumbria circa 1025 ,
this could be a measure of Englishness,(for those who know their history ).

I am going back in the garden now I have to finish getting the pool ready for the summer. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: ;)

We don't insist, we get forced to AFAIK. I'd second "I Vow to Thee my Country" as the national anthem for England.

As for the poem, you lost me when it got to "We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue" - Red White and Blue is the Union Flag, not St. George's Cross.

I have no problem with being English, British and European all at the same time. :?
