A while back I said that my grandma had had a fall and had got a hairline fracture in the pelvis and a nasty cut on her leg. Progress reports were asked for at the time.

She is doing very well - she is home, and has a zimmer frame. However, the frame is being used far less than it was when I saw her last. She is a little wobbly at times, but she is managing to move around her flat without it. Next week, she gets issued with a stick and the frame is taken away. This means that, for the first time in a long time, she can go out. She’s naturally feeling rather pot bound, and it wanting to get out and about again.

Yesterday, by way of entertainment, I took bonfire night to her. I found some cake-top fireworks in Paperchase, and we set those off for her in her flat. That provided some amusement and fun.

It's nice to hear some good news, Paul. She has to get back into the swing of things. I see many elderly people in my job who are fit as fleas in their seventies, eighties and nineties and I've even had dealings with the occasional 100+ lady. I also see many people finished at far younger ages. I am sure that mindset has a lot to do with it and it sounds like your gran's a fighter.

Yeah, really pleased for her. Glad you got some entertainment in for her as well.

In hospital, it's quite gratifying to see a little old lady come in with a fall, have an operation and then get back on their feet out and see them walking (albeit with aids) within a week of arriving in hospital.

Good news is good. As I said before, she's lucky to have you. I know of at least one elderly person who no one seems to care about, and his future is uncertain since his wife died. Being old and alone is a nightmare.


I'd have thought it was quite gratifying to see anyone recover from a serious accident, but I guess the odds are worse for elderly patients.

She was kept in for two weeks because of the haematoma on her leg - it had been worked on in A&E but wasn’t healing properly.

Anyway, I’m sure the fireworks will give her something to tell her friends when they call round. She seems to have a steady flow of well-wishers and they bring her various forms of conversation, which is good.

When she is used to the walking stick, I’ll bring her over to Chelmsford and take her to the high street - we have a couple of rivers and a park that runs right through the middle of the town, so it’s not all to traipse around. I’m sure she’d love the change of scene and the chance to move around somewhere which doesn’t have 4 walls and a door.
