Post subject:  Your favourite quotes

Just got these in an email:

Quote:
The exchange between Churchill & Lady Astor:

She said, "If you were my husband I'd give you poison."
He said, "If you were my wife, I'd drink it."

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease."
"That depends, Sir," said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress."

"He had delusions of adequacy." - Walter Kerr

"He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire." - Winston Churchill

"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." Clarence Darrow

"He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." - William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway).

"Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I'll waste no time reading it." - Moses Hadas

"I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain

"He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends.." - Oscar Wilde

"I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend.... if you have one." - George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill
"Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second.... if there is one." - Winston Churchill, in response.

"I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here." - Stephen Bishop

"He is a self-made man and worships his creator." - John Bright

"I've just learned about his illness. Let's hope it's nothing trivial." - Irvin S. Cobb

"He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others." - Samuel Johnson

"He loves nature in spite of what it did to him." - Forrest Tucker

"Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.." - Oscar Wilde

"He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts... for support rather than illumination." - Andrew Lang (1844-1912)

I can't remember for the life of me who said it, but one of my favourite quotes is:

'If knowledge is power, why aren't women gods?'

So, quotes please! ;)

Another Astor v Churchill

Sir you are drunk
That I may be, madam. But in the morning I shall be sober. You, however, will still be ugly.

Ooh dear, try "Madam you are ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober".

Far more concise, and also notably more accurate.

"I fear that all we have done is awaken a sleeping tiger and fill him with a terrible resolve." Admiral Yamamoto after the attack on Pearl Harbour- no sh!t, Sherlock.

"The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other bastard die for his." General George S Patton.

I've just found this one from Patton- "If everyone is thinking alike, someone isn't thinking." Now, that's a good one.

And, my all time favourite from the acting commander of the 101st Airborne at Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge- Brigadier General Anthony McCauliffe. When, surrounded, short of ammunition, food, winter clothing and other essentials, he was asked by the German commander to surrender. He replied

"Nuts!"

"...you know frankly, going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion" - Jed Babbin (I may well be killed by murder for mentioning that one)

Having just enjoyed watching all three Back To The Future films...

"If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious [LIFTED]."

"It works! It works! I finally invent something that works! "

"Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here!"

"I hate manure!"

I can cut and paste all day from IMDB, but I won't. :D

Here's one from an American guy who was trying to break into directing movies. He blogged for a bit about life, family and work. Then he had some family issues and his blogging dried up.

I saved this one, though. It's quite pertinent for me in the place I'm in right now, I think.

Having so many deaths so close together really keeps the spirit of living today for today, doing what you dream, and only being concerned with what really matters, alive. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how much money you make, how many jumping jacks you can do, or whether you’ve got a big butt or not – what really matters is that you’re happy today, because tomorrow could never come.

Laugh at yourself and at life. Not in the spirit of derision or whining self-pity, but as a remedy, a miracle drug, that will ease your pain, cure your depression, and help you to put in perspective that seemingly terrible defeat and worry with laughter at your predicaments, thus freeing your mind to think clearly toward the solution that is certain to come. Never take yourself too seriously.

I'm always laughing at myself...... :?
