Can't remember the exact term, but was watching TV (fed by internal antenna booster, no main antenna connection). Mother dearest is using the food processor in the kitchen and now I can't watch the television (poor signal). I know it's down to dodgy wiring but is there anything I can do to improve the situation, short of telling my mother not to cook whilst I watch TV?

IS the TV plugged in to it's own socket or is it sharing a socket? You can buy 'filters' for TVs but I dislike paying money for them.

Does this food processor have a CE mark?

It shouldn't be causing interference like that, all products are supposed to be electromagnetically compatible. It's the law.

Ideally, you should have a good sized aerial mounted high above the roof with a mast-head amplifier and top-quality coax bringing the signal to your box. That way, any interference generated inside the house is unlikely to cause a problem unless the equipment is totally criminal.

Your problem is the sh!te internal aerial. Get a "proper" one, or do a DIY job to mount the aerial outside any way you can and use good quality coax to bring the signal in. Just get it away from the interference.

Because I'm lazy, my new digi aerial is in the loft. Result? Every time the heating goes on and off I lose the sound for 2 seconds! Still, not as annoying as my neighbour's expensive Sony. His makes an incredibly loud squeak every time there's any interference. Cheap-ass Korean goods FTW!

Our (petrol) lawnmower has a similar effect as it gets pushed past.

If the interference is carried by the mains then plugging the TV and the signal booster into something like this should help.

Alternatively you could just sabotage the food processor

I've noticed that anyone flicking any of the light switches upstairs is enough to kill my Freeview signal on Dave at least, it's about the only channel I watch on Freeview, so I don't know if it affects the others (must try it)

By the desk, there's a dual socket outlet. One has a four-strip powering the computer, monitor, printer and speakers. The other has another four-strip supplying the router's power, the PS3, the TV and TV antenna/booster.


We have a huge external aerial and it receives an excellent signal. Unfortunately, I don't have a socket in my room - just one in the 'rents room (which is in use) and two downstairs (again, both in use). Trying to Y-split one of them and extend a socket into my room would be a complete PITA.

TBH the powered antenna works brilliantly - I'm getting all the channels clearly.

I always got better sound quality when the stereo was plugged into its own socket, I was convinced it helped anyway.

The light dimmer in the living room used to freeze the digital TV picture when it was turned up past a certain level.
Upon investigation, the previous owner had wired the 4 way aerial booster into the lighting circuit to power it.

Ah, aren't DIY electrics fun.
