Microsoft don't always make it easy! Nobody ever cleaned up when users left the company before, that means that we have a lot of users on the system who no longer exist. I made sure they were all disabled and set about deleting them - making backups of their home directories, for example. The frustrating one was their e-mail accounts. Why doesn't Exchange 2003 include a facility to dump specific users? I've now managed it with ExMerge, but that took some searching and then it doesn't work "out of the box", I needed to set up additional groups and users to accomplish the task! It looks like Exchange 2007 at least has an export option... But Exchange 2003 comes with Outlook licences, Exchange 2007 doesn't, so you need to purchase the Outlook licences extra - not a major problem for machines which include MS Office, as it is part of the suite, but for machines that only need e-mail, that is another additional cost and licensing worry! Our supplier says that most companies upgrading to Exchange 2007 keep a copy of 2003 kicking around, to save on the Outlook costs!

Come the day, you're going to find the migration to 2010 even more fun, believe me. Can't really say much though... Jon

Big D I spent the whole of yesterday afternoon backing up and deleting old user folders from the server so I feel your pain. I managed to free up about 50gb. Hooray me!

Aww I quite like Lotus Notes. I only have 2 gripes. 1) you can't sort by subject and b) it saves each reply as a seperate message which can clog up your inbox rather. I love the functionality of the calendar and it's interplay with the mail system, I also really like the archive function.

The 'thread blocking' on 2010 is great when a conversation goes awol and you dont care for replies/ people spamming an alias

I use Lotus Notes 8.0.2 on the works laptop and I can sort my emails by subject... I'm assuming you mean have the mails listed in Subject order, as opposed to date order...

You should be able to sort by sender, date, subject... etc etc
We're rolling out Notes 8 at the moment. I've been using it a while. It's OK, a bit slow to open up.

Grrr! Symantec is getting on my goat though.
You can remotely install their software, but when decomissioning a machine or just uninstalling the software, you can't just remotely uninstall it, you need to go to each machine and uninstall it per-hand.
At least I have RDP and can virtually visit each machine to do the uninstall...

Is there no way at all it can be scripted? I guess it's only 70 machines at least.

It would be possible to push out a vbscript to each computer, using MS SMS, but we don't have it installed here - yet...
It is on my todo list, along with a couple of hundred others, to modernise the EDV here, but the AV update has a higher priority...

Two questions spring to mind... Can the PCs be turned on remotely, and if staff are being asked to leave their PCs turned on at the end of the day can they be trusted to do so? We have a "switch it off" policy at my place of work, and the answer to both questions I asked is no, which made the recent AV upgrades... interesting...

E-mail sent out asking all to leave their machines on...
If anybody "forgets", I will do it in work time next week...
