There is a new "problem" cropping up with food delivery apps, among other things.

People are being subjected to dozens of pizzas being delivered to their addresses. Somebody uses the persons name and address (and a fake email account for registration) to register themselves by one of the food delivery apps, they then order food to be delivered to the target.

The current case that is making big press over here is a lawyer, who has been receiving over 30 pizzas a week. He has reported it to the police and they are investigating.

A similar problem is people ordering packages from online suppliers, which then turn up with an invoice. If people refuse the package, there is no problem, but they should still report it to the police.

The big loser in all this is, obviously, the restaunts that are being used to send out the pizzas, they don't get any money for the food delivered and they can't take the food back and sell it to someone else. For the online shops, they are stuck with having to pay for the delivery and return costs.

I'm trying to work out how this is possible. Surely you need a form of payment when ordering? Or is it some sort of cash-on-delivery system ?

(I've historically downloaded hungryhouse and justeat but neither had anything I wanted to try so never ordered).

Certainly on the Dominos and Pizza Hut apps, provided the order is below a certain amount (£25 - £30 IIRC) then you can opt to pay as cash on delivery.

It's basically harassment via a third party. I'm guessing the lawyer big_D mentioned has represented someone or an organisation that someone or a group find objectionable.
I'm pretty sure that bogus deliveries have be used by some animal rights groups in the past as a form of harassment.

Packages from online shop with an invoice? That’s interesting - I’ve never come across anything like that which doesn’t require payment before anything is dispatched.

The whole food delivery thing needs to be protected by payment by card up front, really.

Most online shops over here offer payment on delivery.

The food apps all take cash on delivery.

Credit cards are still very rare over here and most people wouldn't use a card for such small purposes.
