A very weird one, basically I was going round farms asking for metal detecting permission etc etc, I drive up to one and no sign of farmer and its getting dark so I change mind knocking on the door and im parked just outside his farmhouse and this is out in the countryside and not many houses atall, out of nowhere a guy in shorts approaches me in my car and hes like "care for some pizza?" randomly and I hadnt dinner and I was hungry so I couldn't refuse etc I was in mild shock at this out of the blue offer, he was a total stranger, never met or seen the guy before in my life so I went out my car and he took me to his garden and he had a outdoor cooker thing and before I know it im having dinner with him his wife and 2 kids, 4 absaloute strangers which I found this event amusing and hard to get my head round etc, wasnt really that awkward it was good banter etc and everything was free but I feel the need to repay him now as I dont like leeching off people so is it normal for me to go round sometime and gift them a bottle of wine or something? what would the people of this forum do if you were me?

Yeah, why not? Maybe a bunch of flowers for the wife.

Sounds like a good idea. Did you notice what they were drinking? Maybe some beer/wine for him and flowers for her perhaps? It would be good to acknowledge their kindness in some way.

Yeah, I would definitely get them a small something each; flowers / chocolates always seem to go down well with ladies, and alcohol with men! Given you are in Scotland then an interesting whisky might go down well.

In this situation, no. You can always ask the parents to say hello to them on your behalf.

If, for some reason, you DO take a present for the kids, don’t give them to the child directly. Offer it to the parents. They will either take the present and hand it on, or invite you to give it to the child directly. It’s an odd thing, I know, but it shows respect for the parents and says “check this first”. If you were a good friend of the family, then interactions with the children would be more relaxed.
