G7 Resilience Advisers: EU Exit Readiness and Response Support to Local Preparedness (up to three roles)

The Resilience and Emergency Division (RED) supports the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's (MHCLG) core objective of delivering local communities with excellent public services through enabling resilient localities: which can prepare for, respond to, and recover from civil emergencies of all types. The division works closely with local responders (the police, the fire and rescue service, local authorities and others), the Civil Contingencies Secretariat in the Cabinet Office and other government departments. We also work closely with other divisions in MHCLG on joint issues such as resilience of health and social care, sustainability of Local Authorities and impacts of EU Exit. RED priorities are to:

[...]

We have 9 month secondment opportunities (with the possibility of extension) to support MHCLG's preparations for EU Exit, both in the case of a no-deal or negotiated exit. These roles are to provide support to the local resilience community to develop, test and exercise plans for the mitigation of any disruption following our exit from the EU. Key areas of work will include: developing the strategy for supporting local areas in mitigating the effects of any disruption resulting from the implementation of EU Exit; developing and delivering training, guidance and exercises; liaising with Local Resilience Forums, via our Resilience Adviser network, to ensure they are putting in appropriate plans for EU Exit; developing and delivering any necessary funding mechanisms; liaising closely with the wider RED teams to ensure appropriate read-across to wider strategy and policy work; and taking an active and leading role in the delivery of these plans when we exit the EU, including working in and supporting the Operations Centre(s).

DUP 'could vote against the Budget' over Brexit deal

The Democratic Unionist Party's 10 Westminster MPs are planning to vote down the Budget later this month if they are unhappy about the government's Brexit plans, the BBC understands.

Theresa May relies on DUP support in key votes because she does not have a majority in the House of Commons.

But the DUP could abandon this deal if Brexit means new barriers between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, Newsnight's Nick Watt said.

Kent motorway to shut as work begins on possible post-Brexit lorry park

A Kent motorway is undergoing a series of closures as work begins on turning it into a potential lorry park to deal with the possible impact of a no-deal Brexit.

In the most significant practical work yet to prepare for the consequences of the UK crashing out of the EU, the M26 will be closed through the night until next week for site surveys before another set of closures in the month leading up to Christmas to install gates in the central reservation.

The start of the work was not disclosed to the MP Tom Tugendhat, who criticised the transport secretary, Chris Grayling, for apparently reneging on assurances. Grayling said he was confident that the contingency measure would not be needed after Brexit.

Grayling being “confident” about anything should ring alarm bells.

Brexit: UK to consider longer transition period

The UK's transition out of the EU could be extended by "a matter of months" to ensure no hard border in Northern Ireland, Theresa May has said.

The prime minister said this was a new idea that had emerged in negotiations and was not expected to be used.

The UK leaves the EU in March, and the current plan is for a transition period to finish at the end of 2020.

Some Tory MPs and Brexit campaigners are angry at the idea of the UK being tied to EU rules for longer.

Yeah - that’s because some tax rules kick in next year which will shine the light on their investments, and will make the pay their way. They don’t like that.

The problem with assuming you can just drop out and go full on WTO is that this only works if all the WTO nations agrees with your proposals. They don't. You can't just rock up and expect to trade from the off.

We'll need to start negotiating our way through this now, and our record with negotiating isn't too good given the past 18 months. So this isn't the smooth run that the Brexit lot thought it would be, and one of the biggest obstacles will be Russia who could veto anything we propose because, well, they're not really our friends at the moment.

Also, Liam Fox seems to be running this particular part of the [LIFTED].

Maybe those who voted Brexit can justify this.

Theresa May has refused to guarantee that the NHS will have enough medicines in the event of a "no-deal" Brexit.

The prime minister insisted she was working for a "good" divorce with the EU and that the government was making "responsible contingency decisions".

Regardless of how your brain was functioning on the day of the vote and what you hoped your X was communicating (hint: it was not communicating what was in your brain, just what the ballot paper said), we are in a situation were anyone who relies on regular supplies of drugs could be adversely affected by Brexit.

I don’t think I need to spell this out, but I will just in case you’re too short sighted to realise: your vote means people’s lives are in jeopardy. People will find their quality of life lowered if they can not get their regular supplies of medication. People may well die. I hope you are proud.

Paul, you're asking for a rational response from people who voted for Brexit.

You could be waiting a while.

Brexit: Arron Banks challenged over Leave.EU funds
Businessman Arron Banks has been challenged to explain where the money for his Brexit campaign came from.

Mr Banks is the subject of a police probe into claims he was not the "true source" of £8m loaned to his Leave.EU campaign in the 2016 EU referendum.

The Electoral Commission referred the case to the National Crime Agency, which said potential criminal offences may have been committed.

There seemed to be a lot of different companies with “Rock” in the name here, as well as quite a few unnamed ones.

Leave.EU and Arron Banks insurance firm face £135,000 in fines
Pro-Brexit campaign group Leave.EU and an insurance company owned by its founder Arron Banks face total fines of £135,000 over breaches of data laws.

It follows an Information Commissioner investigation into the misuse of personal data by political campaigns.

The report says more than a million emails sent to Leave.EU subscribers contained marketing for the Eldon Insurance firm's GoSkippy services.

So, that’s one fine against Aaron “bent as ninepence” Banks.

Lord Sugar: I could have swung EU referendum
Lord Sugar claims he could have swung the 2016 EU referendum in favour of Remain if he had taken part in a live TV debate.

The Apprentice star said he had been invited by former prime minister David Cameron to "take the lead for the Remain camp" on the BBC debate.

But he said he rejected the invitation and was replaced by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

He did say that if it were to run again, he would because of all the politicians making a mess of it. Got to wonder why he lobbed £8m at leave.eu if that’s the case.

Errr. Looks like our Brexit secretary has only just looked at a map and found out how close we are to France.
