I was quite happily watching Stargate SG-1 until about 10 seconds ago. What happened? [LIFTED] WINDOWS 7 DECIDES IT HAS THE RIGHT TO REBOOT MY PC WITHOUT USER INTERVENTION IS WHAT HAPPENED. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why oh why, have MS programmed this [LIFTED] OS to assume that Windows can safely reboot if I haven't told it not to within a certain amount of time!? What if I had been called away and left an important document open but unsaved!? BASTARDS. Even OS X has the [LIFTED] DECENCY to require my intervention before it reboots!! ![]() ![]() |

Boss at work lost a fairly important document he'd spent 45 minutes working on after the machine decided that just then would be a great time to restart for some updates - and this is XP. You have my sympathy. |

Then you're an idiot for doing so. ![]() On a more serious note, I don't know of many serious windows users that leave windows update with free reign. I have it set to automatically download updates, but then it asks my permission before installing. |

That's how I have it, but at some stage you do need to let them install. It really is rather annoying that you have to do so at a carefully calculated time, and I've been caught out by the 10 minute timer myself a couple of times. |

I have manual downloads and manual updates. Even after installing the updates, I tend to continue doing whatever I'm doing and switch the laptop off at the end of the day and then hard boot the next day. That's the 'restart windows' as far as I'm concerned. It's never rebooted on me. |

It's pretty awful tbh. I've got it set to automatically download and then updates install when I shut down at the end of the day. Annoyingly i've had a situation where it's restarted whilst i've been in-game. For the top spot on the ClanBase ladder. Relatively important that. I learnt from that mistake. |

How did he manage that? It asks whether it should reboot now or not and it won't generally restart if there is an application open with unsaved work... ![]() As to the OP, just use gpedit.msc to change the reboot rules. I have all the machines at work set to update automatically, but wait until the user shuts down, as opposed to automatically requesting a reboot after install. |

On XP and Vista I have it set up to notify me of new updates but to ask me whether to install them or not. I don't want it downloading something I may not need. So, never had this problem. |

I don't know! He was typing away happily, looked up and came to join our discussion, got back to his chair and there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. I'm not sure if there's some element of the system that's remotely administered, mind you. |

+1 The random unexplained error messages, the uglyness, the x64 bit version, the almost immediate performance degradation after a fresh install. Nope, I don't get it either. Couldn't wait to get rid of it. |

That would be the “this show has been on endless play loops on Sky for waaayyyyy too long and you need to get out for a bit” feature. |
