Okay I know the rule for this in "the other place" was strictly for current cinema releases (or was that eventually relaxed?) - so I thought I'd start a newer, revised one here - because there are so many great films out there in the dusty vaults of cinema history that must occasionally be bought to everyone's attention as much as there are new ones in the cinema. So, with that in mind, can we establish some ground rules: 1. No Spoilers - and if on proof-reading your post you get the feeling it contains spoilers - please lead your post with: ***MAY CONTAIN SPOLIERS*** 2. Indicative Scoring - I think it's nicer if we allow individuals to choose their own rating system - 5/5, 100%, Lock-of-the-Week... 3. Links - providing an imdb will win you brownie points in my book. I can't actually think what other conditions need really apply here... but will amend if necessary. |

Hunger (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0986233/ Steve McQueen, former Turner Prize* winner, turns his hand to directing feature-length movies after forging a prolific name for himself in the art world with this awesome, outstanding piece of brutally harsh, visceral & deeply insightful look at the events surrounding the Maze prison riots of some twenty years ago. I watched this last week following a friend's reccomendation; advice I was most grateful for after sitting through some of most memorable scenes committed to film in some years. It is not a film for the faint hearted, nor one for those approaching it with preset conceptions of the events surrounding the Northern Ireland struggles (it sparked fury and applause in equal measures on it's premiere). The performances from the relatively unknown actors are convincingly sincere and believable, the cinematography rich with exceptional "pace" & composition and the real-life story, one I was near-entirely ignorant of, is told in a manner that leaves the viewer catatonic with a wealth of internal conflicts that mean this film will sit with you for a long time. Wholeheartedly reccomended. 5/5 *Fine Art for those not in the know - although some might argue about the "fine" part most years. |

Watchmen - 2009 I watched the Watchmen... managed to catch the last showing at my local cinema [was at uni when it came out and the cinema is a git to get to]... I'm going to defy most of the reviews of Watchmen that have gone before and say that the film was a gigantic 'Meh'... I've not read the Graphic Novel so I can't say how true to that it was... The film wasn't bad... it held my interest for the whole ass-numbing [just shy of] 3 hours... the story was good, even if it does require you to pay attention to everything for it to make any sense, the action scenes were good, cgi good it was all a around good film but after watching it i got the same feeling i get after playing some video games... it was enjoyable to watch/play... *once*... and after seeing/playing it it goes on the shelf and never gets touched again [not for quite a while at least]... Rating: I watched the Watchmen and I just can't rate it highly - 6/10 6 out of 10 is probably unfair... it was a good film... a film i enjoyed and i would recommend you see... that said I'll probably not go out of my way to watch it again... as good as it was I just can't rate it highly... |

Need for Speed - Neue Models, original Teile (not sure on the English title, translated it is "new models, original parts"). Saw this at the weekend with my girlfriend's daughter and 3 of her girlfriends...  Anyway, action packed, much more bloody than the previous incarnations. When cars crash here, they really crash, I don't think most of the drivers would survive. It is very gritty, but well done, in many respects. It is close to being up to the quality of the first episode, it is certainly better than the second and the less said about Need for Speed Underground, sorry, Fast and the Furious - Tokyo Drift, the better... If you like the "scene" of these types of movies, it is good. Vin Diesel puts in a good performance as Torreto. I find Vin Diesel a bit "hit and miss", sometimes he plays a part which suits him (Toretto, Riddick, Xxx) and I can watch the film, other times he is a waste of screen space (Knock Around Guys and that "babysitter" thing... ). (No, I haven't flipped out, Xxx is a crap film, but it is a good laugh and the sort of film to watch when you are bored, the characters are fairly plastic, with the exception of Xander Cage and Gibons, but the action is James Bond knock-off fun.)Toretto is still on the run and finds out that the local authorities in South America are closing in, so he splits, leaving his crew and girlfriend Letty (from the first film) behind. Brian O'Connor is back on the right side of the law, working for the FBI. Their paths cross again, when Letty is killed by drug dealers, then the film really kicks into the Fast & Furious formula. Formulaic? Yes. A great film? No. Worth watching? If you like this sort of film YES. 4/6 points. As a general film, it is okay, for this type of film it is good, for the F&F franchise, it is very good. |

I agree Vin has his place in a movie. The big bad ass action guy. He's not going to win an oscar but hell, when you need something blown up....

Are you implying Irreversible? I don't know if I could watch that again. I did check out La Haine on your recommendation though. Loved it! The next film I intend to see is Coraline. Expect a full review. |

Sorry, that is just the "preview" part of the story, before the titles and the film really starts... Didn't think I was giving away more than was in the trailers I saw in the cinema...
