Post subject:  YouTube won’t be supported on older devices after April
Worth noting this here - older devices includes Apple TV version 2 and earlier, I think the PS Vita will lose support, as will some smart TVs (I know one person who will be affected). For me, this means using a PlayStation now to watch YouTube on my TV, before I could use my Apple TV. Also, if you are using iOS 6 or earlier, you will need to use the mobile web site in Safari. The app will no longer work.

YouTube is changing its API, and it seems that older devices aren’t along for the ride.

I use the YouTube app on my AppleTV, which is a v2 variety. *sigh*
I guess for the time being I'll still be able to stream it from my iPad.

Current thinking is that this is a move to a paid no-ad service from YouTube and content providers can put their videos behind a paywall, with the first port of call being to eliminate all the “free to access” platforms.

That’s my AppleTV 2 losing a useful feature too.

They are dropping support for older browsers - kept getting a warning in IE 8.
This isn't them just moving over fully to HTML5 and whatever new codec Google are using for YouTube is it.
I mean the profit motive also makes a lot of sense.

That'll be the death-knell for my Apple TV Mk. 1...

Still, as you can't turn the darned thing off, we unplug it when not in use... It hasn't been plugged back in since Spring 2014. We tend to use the Amazon FireTV these days and I think we have used the YouTube app on it once.

I don't think so, I've been using HTML 5 in IE and Firefox for months now. New codec might be a reason, although they are booting NPAPI out of Chrome as well, which kills off a lot of addins.
