I’m sure the government will be quickly looking to see how they can stifle this one before anyone starts claiming backdated pay.

The Tribunal stipulated something about a 3 month limit on backdating of pay so it's not like there can be claims rolling back to the 1990's (which there potentially could have been).

On the whole I think this is a good decision, at least in cases where there is regular scheduled overtime.
Not entirely clear from the article if this applies to voluntary overtime. That would be harder to justify IMHO.

Still, I'm not going to be holding my breath as I suspect the CBI and friends, including the government, will be falling over themselves to try and get this one reversed and in the process it could drag on for years.

I've done overtime the last 2 weekends but it was voluntary to help out my old department at work.

I've done it in the past, but not for years.

Paid overtime? I remember that once

I've never been paid overtime but doctors generally aren't. If I claimed all the extra hours I'd worked in hospital, I'd be a lot richer. A lot of the NHS runs on the goodwill of its staff - something which is always being eroded by the govt.

+1

I do an average of 10 hours overtime a week, but I haven't been paid overtime in over 20 years.

Why should it? You get paid a higher rate for overtime to compensate you.

My shift often has me working Bank Holidays (Christmas and New Year - for example) and for those I get the choice of overtime or time-in-lieu.
If there's holiday cover required and I can't shuffle my shifts around to cover for the gaps, overtime would be available for the time I work.

I work Christmas and bank holidays etc for no extra pay. It comes with the job.

I used to get TOIL if I worked nights or weekends, but that was many years ago. Not really fussed, these days. As has been said, it comes with the job.

Last time i got O/T was 1999. Since then it has (in theory) been required as part of my job and is reflected in my pay (yeah right)

However I do get informal toil if I do a lot
