Post subject:  Dating people at work
What are people's views? There is someone at work I quite like and in considering asking her for dinner or something but not sure if it's a done thing.

What are people's views?

Obviously I'm completely fine if I asked and she said no. Just not sure if I should ask.

Is she in your team or just works in the same office? If it's someone you have to work closely with everyday that'd be a no I think. If you barely interact with her at work probably fine?

My advice is: Don't.
Just been friend zoned by a girl at work that I'm still completely into after she started dating someone else from work. So we've gone from being as thick as thieves to really not speaking and having awkward silences instead.
She's also taking up the 0.5 half of my tech contract. So we'll be crossing paths all the time. It's going to be an absolute hoot, let me tell you.

Of course, IANAL, YMMV, read instructions before assembly.

Same thing happened to me about a million years ago. Luckily, the job market at the time was still good enough that I could walk away and find alternative employment.

Having said that, I'd still go ahead and ask her.

As said, if the place is big enough and you wouldn't be constantly in close proximity it'd probably be fine (not sure if some places have a disclosure policy in place though if you're on different levels of the ladder)


For me though....
Don't defecate where you eat :) hardly helps it's such a small office

I wouldn't do it.

One of my previous bosses did it, ended up marrying the woman. But when he asked her out, he told her, that if they went out together, she would have to find another contract...

First time I did it:

She was married
We both had to leave our jobs
She ended up divorced (with me as adulterer on court paperwork)
I ended up heartbroken and destroyed for years afterwards

2nd time I did it:

She slept with my roomate when wasted one night and then whilst still pissed and with him in her bed came to wake me up and tell me she liked me.
We nearly killed each other for a couple months
We're both very much in love and we still work together

Prof's scenario is one I've encountered too many times.

What have you got to lose?? Only your dignity and your job, hardly the be all and end all ;)
