Interesting article in Wired about the use of the word "xenomorph" in Aliens, and why it's not the correct name for the creature.

I had a lengthy debate with a couple of mates about that very thing and long time ago - it lasted most of a drinking session. It was sparked off when one mate referred to them as Xenomorphs and, being a pedantic git, I stepped in and said Gorman only suggested they might be dealing with a Xenomorph; and that it quickly became clear that they hadn't encountered this foe before. I even pointed out that Ripley wouldn't have had to be there if this was a previously known enemy for the marines. In the end we vowed to sit down and re-watch the video - which Mark and I did but Col never managed to be available, having been the one who argued that I was wrong...

Having said that, even I refer to them as xenomorphs, because a lot of people recognise them as that.

Jesus, I'll be visiting Anchorpoint later then...

I've always loved the taking on the host's characteristics thing. There's a nonsensical example in Batman Vs. Aliens IIRC (sadly the creature's never reached Gotham to my knowledge), where an 'offscreen' facehugger attacks a crocodile lmao. It does however lead to a fcuking impressive-looking Alien. The comics are great fun for that sort of silliness. The creature has fought some brilliant characters; Superman, Green Lantern, Dredd, Terminator... Someone fought Tarzan but I've a feeling that was a Predator

I've a load of the Dark Horse comic books - some set after Aliens, but before Alien3 turned up, so Newt's still there. I can't remember the word Xenomorph used in them - though I'll certainly happily have a read just to be sure.

I've got most of those too, but it's been that long since I read them they've all blended into one. I've even got the AvP gns released at the time to capitalise on the movies, but those are pretty dire. Some of the AvP novels are pretty good.

He's on any number of forums talking about how he researched it, why he pulled the site and so on. I'm going to copy the text and make Kindle-readable docs.

That sounds like a plan. I may do similar.

I'm confused. All that fuss and big article to explain what the word xenomorph means? Really??

Did we not all know that already? I can imagine Americans not knowing it, but anyone with a limited understanding of Ancient Greek/Latin from school would know what's going on. Or am I missing something?

The thing is that people call the creature from the film Xenomorph even though in canon it has no name.
