http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/j ... s-cupcakes Okay, those were some expensive cupcakes that are obviously being used here as a headline grabber, but can that sort of expenses claim be justified do we think? I certainly wouldn't and couldn't put anything like that through my workplace expenses, never mind a publicly-funded corporation. If there's grub of any description going about it's self-funded! |

What kind of joyless pit doesn't buy staff the occasional treat to say thank you for something? This story would only be interesting if he ate them all himself and made a reality show about that for Channel 5. |

Total non -story. My company buys us all cakes, biscuits, fruit etc. every week. Once a month lunch is laid on for everyone, the company pays for a massive Christmas party with an open bar AND gives each team the money for a lunch out together once a year. £120 on cupcakes and £50 on a taxi is nothing compared to the expenses I process monthly! |

Yeah, headline grabbing churnalism. Treating his staff for doing a good job suggests he actually gives a crap about them. It's probably worth more than the outlay for the positive effect on staff morale - everyone likes to feel appreciated, no matter how small the gesture. |

When I worked in Industry rather than the public sector then my boss used to take the team out if we have done a good job at the end of project / year end etc This is peanuts (or Cupcakes!) |

Exactly, and the meal would be around 50 quid per head, that sounds reasonable for London... |

Less the cherry on top, more the icing on the (cup)cake? |

There's about £150 per head allowance from the HMRC for xmas parties etc. Apart from that it comes under business expenses which reduces your profit (& tax bill) |
