"About nine" World War Two explosives have been washed up on a beach in Essex following recent storms, Thames Coastguard have said.

Experts from the Royal Navy carried out controlled explosions on the anti-aircraft shells at Westcliff-on-Sea at about 09:45 GMT.

Was he in Germany last week? An excavator dug up an old RAF bomb, killing the driver and injuring 11 people, and causing thousands of Euros worth of damage to houses in the area, blowing off roofs and smashing windows.

Apparently, there’s this huge stash of explosions off the Essex coast somewhere. It’s a sunk boat form WWII, and if it goes up, it will cause flooding in Holland.

Ah - here we are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Richard_Montgomery

I saw a programme about the Richard Montgomery a couple of months ago (might have been on youtube) - it's cargo is considered so unstable that they won't risk attempting removal, so they're just waiting for it for go bang (or BOOM!) and there's little else they can do.

It's not a 1.5 kiloton bomb waiting to go off - even if it all goes up it'll be a chain reaction. Whilst not exactly the same, I used to initiate around 4 tonnes of explosive at a time but using 25ms delay detonators - so you'd get twenty 200Kg explosions all taking place within half a second - quick but well controlled, more efficient and safer than just letting rip.

The difference is, the explosive velocity of the stuff I was using was typically 3800m/s, and the tnt based munitions aboard the Richard Montgomery is likely a little over twice that speed so the chain reaction will likely be a fast cascade explosion - still pretty bloody devastating, but not a huge single event.

When you mentioned the scale I thought of this one.

Unexploded bombs, rare dinosaur fossils and an unknown boat wreck have been unearthed on England's beaches during the recent stormy weather. But what else could appear on our shores?

Bratty?
