Rather hypnotic.

I don't get it.

A fractal image is one that if you take one section of the image and enlarge it then it looks the same as the original.

Like a fern. If you take one small "branch" of a fern, it looks just like the full thing. In fact you can then take a "branch" off this branch and it still looks the same.

The image in the video is a graphical representation of a fractal equation. All they are doing is zooming in to a smaller and smaller area and re drawing the image in this area.

It's pretty cool.

Yeah, I know about fractals, but this video just looked like any other fractal-zoom image/video.
There's obviously some sort of fuss about this one that is totally passing me by. *shrug*

The further in you zoom, the more accuracy is required in the sums. calculating all those pixels to 300 decimal places takes a lot of processing power.

Should it though? because they are repeating patterns so it should be a multiple of an earlier result or am I missing something?

The Mandelbrot set never actually repeats. Mathematically, every bit is different to every other bit, even if the graphical representation looks very similar.

I remember leaving my BBC Micro on over night so it could create a Mandelbrot pattern. Not an animation - just one screen.

If you watch that animation, it gets serious wacy in places, but always seem to return to the familiar shape.

Anyone find it rather creepy how many of those patterns look like bleeps on a heartbeat monitor?

Ah I see.

Yeah, it's just that's they've gone to greater accuracy than anyone in the past.

It’s one of those mathematical curios, like PI or prime numbers - how far can you calculate it to? Is there a repeat or a pattern? Stuff like that. The need for ever more accuracy is the challenge.
