So in. Few weeks time, I'm helping a friend out by videoing his band. The venue wants a risk assessment filled in. It's going to be me, a prosumer video camera (which will be running off batteries) and a tripod. I may have my headphones and a still camera, but I'm hardly the BBC as far as equipment is concerned. I've got all kinds of questions to answer - do I have an H&S policy? Is the equipment PAT tested? (Answers for both - no) as well as other stuff that I'm not sure about. I'll be asking him about these, as technically he's the "employer" for the gig. Reading up about PAT testing it sounds like it's not mandatory anyway, as long as the equipment is in good condition (which it is). |

I know they won't let us plus anything into a mains supply offshore unless it's ben PAT tested. There are plenty of risk assement matrix templates online you can use. They mainly work on a traffic light system. You need to list what you're doing, highlight any risks and the consequences and list anything you need to do to reduce the risk to an acceptable level. eg. Cables running acros the floor are a trip hazard. You could cover them with high visibility tape etc etc. |

It might be easier if he knows where he will be filming to work out potential problems before hand. Such as mains sockets and how far he may need to run cables. That would reduce significantly risks of tripping. Surge protectors could also reduce fire risks. Would PAT testing be necessary or expensive? |

PAT testing won't be needed. If the venue requires it they'll do it in the spot. You also can't risk assess without knowing exactly where you'll be in the venue and a shedload of other details. All you can plan for is ensuring cables are taped down,tripods being secured and a barrier being around the cameraman if its gong to be busy. Check all cable aren't worn, the correct fuses are in things and make sure if you feed audio from the desk to the camera you power your kit from the same phase as the desk. Use a long extension cable if needed. Although the camera is probably double insulated so should be fine |

I think you over estimate what I'm taking. It will be a prosumer level video camera and a tripod. I'm not taking cables - just a spare battery and some extra memory cards. My friend's been there before performing, so he'll be advising me on what the form will need. This is me dipping my toe into the notion of video work. I'll see how it goes. |

If you're mot plugging the battery chargers in there, they won't need PAT testing at all. Even if you are plugging them in, it's up to the venue whether they want it PAT testing. It you're just taking a tripod etc, they'll just want to make sure that you're not going to block emergency exits etc with it. |
