How many people here actually know how to use them well?

I do not have a clue when to use them....

I believe I know how to use them correctly, but would probably do a terrible job at explaining their use to you.

WHAT!?!

;

It's one a : with a tail.

What more do you want to know?

When I was taught this at school, a concept missing apparently in this day and age, you could use a semicolon to punctuate a list. For example:

"Dogs come in various main varieties: dogs for hunting; dogs for herding; dogs for fighting."

Did that make it clearer at all?

Link fixed- Blue ;) *Runs*

No need to run. I often wonder at some of the links that don't work. *sigh*

Yes the thread was not to explain to me how to use them, I do not care, word tells me when I need one. The point was to find out who else doesn't know :)

But thanks for the effort! :)

Yeah, I know what they are, but I hardly use them outside of word, but then word tells me I need to use one :)

And don't you use the semi colon to indicate the list and then commas to seperate the list?

I'd use a colon to indicate a list, like I did in my example.

The thing is some punctuation marks are dying anyway. I mean, look at the poor old apostrophe. It's never been loved, much misunderstood, and now it's virtually dead. Some would say the semicolon is going the same way.

Such is progress.

AFAIK the correct place for the use of a semi colon is on a winking smiley. ;)

I'm sure I was taught that you used semicolons to punctuate a list if you had nested lists, at which point you would use a comma as within the inner list and semicolons to separate the nested lists....Though that's probably wrong...

Though as Fin said, I use them now because my code won't compile without them...

If Word, or another word processor, tells me to use a semicolon I try to reword the phrase/sentence, I don't fully understand why I would use one, so I don't understand why Word wants one there...

Ok an example from my technology coursework.

Whyy? I would have thought a comma?
