Only seven questions: clicky

I'll admit that for one, I required a scientific calculator because I can't do trigonometry in my head. For the fractions and the equations, I needed a pen and paper to help work things out. Got 7/7.

7/7 too, although I had to use a calculator to get the first one (who on earth memorises SIN tables) and a notepad & pen to do the last one. And, tbh, in the nearly 30 years between my O-level and now, I've pretty much never had to use half the skills those tests demonstrate again :D.

I can't even find the questions :?

It doesn't actually say that you can't use a calculator, and any GCSE answer that doesn't show the working out can't get full marks. ;)

Weird.

I use them rather a lot - especially trig and fractions.

It uses Flash so it may be a blocked element?

Since A-levels, I've not had to use any maths other than drug calculations during medical school.

I suspect in this case 'working out' equals figuring out what trig is required and showing you know the right numbers to put in the right equation. I don't think people have ever been expected to just know what (sin/cos/tan) 72 degrees is :).

Someone might need them in their job I suppose, but even then most of this kind of stuff has been handed off to CAD systems and what have you. It's useful to know what maths needs to be done but there's no reason not to hand it off to a program that can do it much quicker that you. However the rest of the time? Arithmetic and not much more tbh. I can't remember the last time I was looking at any angle other than a right angle outside work, for example. And even 'fractions', when was the last time you did it 'long hand' the way it's suggested in the answers? These days I just do a rough conversion to decimal by a bit of subdivision in my head.

FFS. No Flash support on Android any more. Oh well.

I can remember some SIN BTW, specifically 30, 45 and 60 degrees. Were those the relevant ones?

You can put flash on if you want ;) , I did and didn't notice any difference to battery life etc.

When we were doing trigonometry at school, we used calculators.

Typical "working out" would be something along the lines of:

SOH|CAH|TOA

sin & = O/H
O = H x sin &
O = 123 x sin 45
O = 87.0 (3sf)

You didn't need to know what sin 45 was.

(note: forum won't let me post theta symbol from charmap so used & instead).

Except if, like me, you're either in the office testing the software and so can't trust the conversion or in the warehouse armed with a biro and a calculator.

Every day

In my head.

Hmm. Which browser do you use? Just tried Boat with Flash 11 from the Adobe downloads... Says its enabled, but still no quiz.

Yeah, I use Boat (the 'blue' one if that makes any difference)... I'll see if I can find the version I downloaded...
