Inspired by the latest Eliza Doolittle track I thought I'd start a thread.

What shaped your youth and brings back good memories?

I was born in 69 so I was young in 70's and 80s so big when I was little was:

Abba
Elvis
Queen
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet
Heaven 17

Six Million Dollar Man
Dallas
Neighbours
Grease

Brent Cross shopping centre

M25 (no longer had to use the North Circular!)

Soda Stream (I always envied friends who had one but they were really crap lol)

I could go on but it would be a long list!

Wagon Wheels.

They used to be as big as yer face* , now they're barely any bigger than a couple of digestives.

*poetic licence

Ah so you've interpreted it as a size thing, not a popular thing. Yeah Wagon Wheels were always massive. So was the street where I grew up which is now chocka with cars and looks tiny.

FAB ice lollies
Sweet cigarettes with collectible cards (U.F.O, etc)
So-called bubble gum with collectible cards (Star Wars, Planet of the apes)
Humphrey adverts for milk on TV.
Chopper bikes
Yes, 6 million dollar man :) and, as mentioned above, Planet of the apes TV show.
Glam Rock: Slade, etc.
Bay City Rollers (my sister loved them  ).
Shark mania when Jaws arrived in UK cinemas.
Collecting football team logo coins when Dad filled up with petrol at Esso.
Morecambe and Wise

I could go on for ages but better get back to work....

Talking of Esso I used to collect the Smurfs toys from the petrol stations. Had a big collection until one of my so called friends stole them.

I knew you were going for the popularity approach, but Wagon Wheels were big in both ways when I was a sprog.

However, in keeping with the intended meaning of the thread...

How little's little? Will stick to primary school ages for this.

Food:
- curly-wurlies, blackjacks, fruit salad sweets
- kinder eggs had cool toys in them instead of stupid collectables
- those little boxes on streetcorner buildings. You put in 10p, twisted the handle and got 3 bubblegum balls (or a plastic ball containing a toy)
- tip-tops - flavoured sticks of ice that cost 10p for the small one and 15p for the large one.
- plastic cartons of drinks - they were round, and came with a red straw to poke through the lid

TV:
- awesome cartoons: thundercats, he-man, bravestarr, jayce etc. All taught good morals and ethics.
- saturday and sunday morning kids' tv - there used to be dedicated shows hosting cool TV programmes
- competitions for kids on those shows: "left, left, left, right, right" - remember them?
- Action Heros: Knight Rider, A-team (never watched Airwolf), Superboy (yes, superboy)
- Game shows: catchphrase, generation game, blockbusters, going for gold, krypton factor, crystal maze
- Paul Daniels, Benny Hill, Mr Bean

Toys:
- obviously action figures to complement TV programs - too poor to have most but we at least had transformer toys
- etch-a-sketch, speak and spell/maths
- those handheld games that played only one game eg grand prix, tennis, football

Books:
- the library basically. I used to love summer hols because we would get loads of books out each week and read through them. Anansi was the one that I remember the most.
