Thought this might be worth flagging:

Hello,

Thank you for using Google Checkout, the fast, secure way to shop
at stores across the web.

As of 27th July, Maestro cards will no longer be accepted as a
payment method by Google Checkout. You are receiving this
notification because your default card is a Maestro card
that will no longer be supported.

To ensure that your Checkout account is ready for purchases the
next time you shop, you will need to select a new default
credit/debit card. Accepted payment methods are listed at
http://checkout.google.com/support/bin/ ... wer=105916

You may update your payment information now by clicking 'Edit
payment methods' after signing in to your Google Checkout account
at http://checkout.google.co.uk

If you prefer, you also have the option of updating your payment
information when you make your next purchase.

While you will be unable to place new orders with Maestro cards,
refunds and chargebacks for previous orders will be unaffected.

We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any further
questions, please visit our Help Centre at
https://checkout.google.com/support/?hl=en-GB

Kind regards,
The Google Checkout Team

Natwest Fail.

God Bless Visa Debit (formerly Delta). :D

For everything else, there's MasterCard. ;)

And if you don't have a credit card?

I use Click & Buy where I can, they can also book straight from your bank account...

Visa is the way forward.
I have been to a few places in other countries that didn't take Master Card.
Maestro sucks anyway.

How does it suck?

It is a card that lets me buy things and takes money out of my bank account.

How is that different from any other debit card?

Again, some countries I've been to don't always take it.

Apparently, HSBC is moving from Maestro to Visa. I know someone who got a new debit card from them, and it’s Visa. I don’t know what is wrong with Maestro. As long as the thing continues to work, I’m OK. I don’t like using the credit card all the time.

Over here, I don't have a choice, it is Maestro or cash...

What is the difference between Visa debit cards and Maestro/Switch cards?
Is there a difference?

Thats a pity for google they have now lost a customer. As I don't use credit cards online and I only have maestro debit, which i have had no issues with. So will not be using Google checkout again.

Batman has a Visa debit card, and it regularly fails with online transactions.

Personally, while I use the debit card to pay utility bills online, most transactions are done with my Visa credit card.

It is probably mainly down to who can offer the banks and shops the best conditions in any given country. Over here Maestro seems to have the debit card market pretty much sewn up.

Traders used to hate Amex and Diners, because they would take nearly twice the commission of Visa and Mastercard back in the late 80s...

Who said anything about credit cards?

Visa do credit and debit. They're accepted everywhere.

Maestro on the otherhand...

Although I'm getting a bit of deja vu here, as I believe we had this conversation over at the other place?

Basically it boils down to the fact that Maestro in the UK works differently to Maestro in europe due to it's heritage (it used to be switch IIRC), and as a result isn't as widely accepted.
