You know he's left-handed. He must be a communist. Do you know what it means? Just go and look it up.

I didn't look it up. I haven't time. I'm too busy pretending I'm not really racist or stupid.

Thing is, she knows that she doesn't know, and she's too proud to say "I don't now - but it's the word everyone has told me to use"

There's the problem - words are being used with little or no understanding of their real meaning; they have become little more than terms of abuse used by stupid people.

Anyway - good. Her ignorance has been exposed on national TV, and thanks to the Internet, we all know that that person knows nothing. Chances are, the baying crowd behind her would have had an equally hard time giving an answer. Good on the reporter for calling her out on it. It's about time we see this happen.

Quote:
'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.

...

By 2050—earlier, probably—all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron—they'll exist only in Newspeak versions, not merely changed into something different, but actually contradictory of what they used to be. Even the literature of the Party will change. Even the slogans will change. How could you have a slogan like "freedom is slavery" when the concept of freedom has been abolished? The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.

Actually most Americans are ignorant of communism. For example the Italian Communist Party were never as ideologically as extreme as the Soviet or Chinese communist party. Tito was actually a moderate communist by most standards, yet not that closely aligned to Russia as most Americans would think.

Though Americans in general are pretty ignorant of the rest of the world. Though many Brits would be as bad.
