I took my iPhone into Apple today to sort out a crack in the case that had developed and it is in it's last day's warranty, and the lovely guys at the Genius Bar said no worries and replaced it with a brand new replacement. Which incidentally comes with it's own 90days warranty.

:D Very happy bunny

The best bit of customer service that I ever got was from Victorinox. I broke the wood saw blade of my Swiss army knife and sent it off to the makers in Switzerland.

For the cost of postage, they not only replaced the saw, but practically rebuilt the knife with new parts, including of course shiny new red side panels. And this has nothing to do with warranty. I had had it for years.

Nice going on the phone, DaftFunk.

That's worth remembering, I've got five or six different pen knives by them..

The same goes for multi-tool maker Leatherman, they have a lifetime guarantee on all their products as well.

They came under fire from the German consumer association, because you cannot give a lifetime guarantee - not sure why, but I guess they don't want hassles with people sending in 50 year old products for guarantee repair and ending up in litigation...

Anyway, I think Leatherman offer a "3 year guarantee, after that, just return it to us and we'll repair/replace it for free"...

That is pretty impressive.

I have found Apple to be good in that way though. They replaced the casing on my MacBook when it developed a hairline crack. Not quite as cool as having the whole thing replaced like you did though.

With something like a Touch or iPhone, it is probably more cost effective to replace the whole thing (if it is still a current model) than to repair it. They aren't really designed to be taken apart and the case (with touchscreen) is probably the most difficult piece, along with the mainboard to replace. Things like the battery or the antennes might be relatively easy to swap out, in comparison.
