I'm planning a trip to Italy, and I shall pass through several EU countries on the way, I can pass through each one unhindered with my British passport, no forms to fill in etc and I can use the same currency throughout. God bless the European Union, it's a marvellous thing. :D

You'll still have to learn half a dozen languages or risk pissing off the locals  :P

Well said, sir.

Now, if we could only put an end to the incredible levels of magnificent junketing and elaborate gorging that make the MPs' "gravy train" pail in comparison we'd have a winner.

And perhaps it would be nice if the books could get signed off before I die....

But I remain pro-European.

I'm sorry? Everyone knows that English is understood worldwide provided you talk slowly and loudly.

And come across patronising? Learn a bit of their language, they'll then probably be more inclined to help you out in English if you at least tried in their own language.

Does one also find that if after several attempts the subject doesn't comprehend, you resort to some sort of whipping? :P
Seriously though, as mbm said, speaking some language can help you, though having an English accent never helps as far as I've heard...

Whenever I’ve been in Brussels, I’ve walked into shops or museums, tried to buy tickets/food etc. in French, and got replies in English. On a plus side, I did end up in a (slightly stilted) French conversation about the BBC, dyslexia and Tintin in the Grand Place with someone once.

I have the misery of going the other way...

Passport isn't enough to get into the UK, you need to fill in an APIS(?) form as well, passport isn't enough to identify you, you need a credit card! :?

My money doesn't work, my debit card doesn't work... :?

Vive le difference!

Dear God. THAT WAS A JOKE. As it happens I'm well, not fluent exactly, but I can certainly make myself understood in Italian and still manage some Spanish.

Quite a lot of places in the UK do take Euros now. Mostly the touristy bits but not just them. I think Tesco have a policy they will accept them and a lot of their goods are priced in both £ and €.

Alton doesn't have a Tescos and the hotel doesn't like taking Sterling, let alone Euros! :?
