I finished watching this last night.

I've seen that video before but it really is the most horrendous thing I have ever seen.

The video I'm talking about is the Roger Williamson crash where David Purley tries to save his life.

The desparation that you can see in David Purley and the nonchalance of the people he is so desparately trying to get to help and all the time the race is continuing as though nothing is happening.

The worst part is where you can see all hope drain out of him and he just doesn't know what to do.

Makes me shudder just thinking about it.

not sure what video you mean or seen it maybe

worst F1 video is some 70s one where a car stops or breaksdown left side of the "crawler" lane and fire crew cross the live road, one man is holding a fire extinuisher on his left hand, F1 car smashed into the man at full speed, rips him apart and the fire extinguisher he was holding smashed the drivers helmet and killed him instantly and his car kept on going for ages with the dead driver. obviously the pit man died too. would show a link but I Dont think anyone would wanna see. brutal video

stupid those years having such little and hardly any extinushers, then safety of the 1930's races with no fencing. saw a spectacular video of a racecar flying right into the crowdstand and wiping out loads :roll:

That was in the show also.

15 spectators and the driver were killed.

All the deaths are tragic but the Williamson one really got to me.

You can't blame the other marshals and drivers though. From what I understand there was confusion as regards to the car i.e. they though it was Purley's car and he'd got out ok as he was stood next to it. And those two marshals who appeared to do nothing had zero fire protection whereas Purley did.

It's still absolutely tragic though and highlights the failings of track safety in F1.

I didn't realise that until I read the wiki.

A tragic accident and a hallmark of not having enough thought put into driver/spectator safety.

I saw this program last night. It is amazing, today, to think that this was the norm in the early days and that it took so long- and so many deaths- to bring about the huge changes that make it such a (relatively) safe sport today.

I agree totally with the comments re David Purley. The utter despair is absolutely clear and I bet it took him a very long time to get over that, if he ever did!! The George Medal was well deserved.
