Post subject: | Trouble with the heating |
I'm having some trouble with the heating in our house and last time someone from the Dennis Forums was able to fix it but I'm not sure if they came over here? The boiler uses a remote wireless thermostat and a switch that moves between on, off and timer. The heating works perfectly in the on position but when I set it to the timer position it just doesn't come on at all. I have made sure to set the timer correctly and I just can't get it to work. Any ideas what else to try before giving British Gas a call as they won't be able to help me over the phone and will have to send an engineer out which could take weeks. ![]() This is the timer system which I believe should be in the on position currently but when I switch the system to timed the heating goes off ![]() |

Have you completely reset the timer and started again? |

Well, the timer is mechanical so not sure how I would do that? |

Is there a master power isolation switch near the timer? Maybe try turning the power off to the timer for a few minutes, might reset it? Just guessing. |

If you rotate the timer, does it click on and off as it goes past the selected times? I mean, does it actually go "clunk"? It sounds like a mechanical issue with the timer, since you say the on / off settings on the switch work OK. It should be pretty easy to see how it works if you take the cover off; you'll see a lever which is supposed to be moved back and forth to actuate a switch. It may simply have come lose. Don't electrocute yourself. I have an almost identical timer on mine, but the previous owners disabled it permanently by ripping the arms off. This was most annoying; hence my recent purchase of an electronic timer which I have to reprogram in binary and Chinese... |

Yes, as I move it round from off/on and vice versa I can feel resistance and a click and the light actually flickers on but it's very dim. I've arranged an engineer for this aft but if the landlord's PA can't make it to attend I may have to start playing with it to see what's going on. |

I take it you turned the switch to timed, unlike the on position in the picture... |

Sounds like the timer has just got old and the contacts inside have failed – you will probably need a new one |

To reset pull all the little teeth round the edges then push back in again. Might be the timer is just old and had it. At least it's just the timer and not the boiler ![]() |
