Well, according to the English write up on Peyo in the Comic Strip Museum in Belgium, stories about the Smurfs are still being “churned out” under the eye of Peyo’s son. The French (and possibly the Flemish) wording seems to be less pejorative. However I think the English was right on the button.

Whenever I go to that museum, or any comic book shop on the continent, I am just staggered by the range of subject material - from comic to deadly serious, from science fiction to very mundane. It’s a shame that there are very few English translations going on.

Oh - and remember - these are books - and I mean proper, hardback books treated with the reverence that one would treat a first edition Dickens or a Shakespeare portfolio.

I do think that Moulinstart is flogging TIntin a bit too hard - with no new stories since Herge´s death, they are making a lot derivative works and to be honest, I’m not really tempted to sink more money in that direction. These days, it’s Blake and Mortimer and Yoko Tsuno which are thankfully being translated into English.

Years ago, you had to buy Heavy Metal on import from the USA to see European artwork with translations. I'd never have seen the work of Enki Bilal or Phillipe Druillet, for example, without buying that magazine.

Far as I know, the only gn I have that had been translated was Death Note (it's unread and somewhere in my room)...

Have you got all 12 volumes? I've read 11 and am waiting for the last one to become available at the library. It started well but once it gets past the content of the two live-action films it becomes tougher going. Very repetitive and over-wordy, though the artwork is good. I've just read Vol 8 of Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service and that's still maintaining its high standard. I do hope the live-action film does it justice. I'll have to look for a new manga series after I finish Death Note.

Must look into the comic, love that poster

I like the way the poster references Carpenter's Halloween and The Thing and that you have to go back 30 years to find anything really good that Carpenter directed. Darkchylde sounds pretty hopeless IMO; the words 'teen' and 'curse' don't bode well in this Twilight era. It IS quite a nice poster though.
