Which One Will Be Batman's Girl(s)?

Image

DEADLINE has posted a report that backs up previous reports/scuttlebutt that director Chris Nolan is meeting with actresses for roles in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

According to their report, there are two female leads -- one a love interest for Bruce Wayne and the other a villain. Said to be in the mix for these roles are Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley. It also seems that none of the aforementioned actresses know exactly what role they may be up for.

As I’ve stated many times here on BOF, I’ve long heard that Catwoman/Selina Kyle would be in BATMAN 3 (CHECK OUT THIS PODCAST). And yes, I've lobbied HARD for the inclusion of Selina Kyle in this film and I've been suggesting Rachel Weisz for the part for a while now. This report also jibes with previous female lead reports. I suspect that Nolan and co. have one of these gals in mind for that particular role.

Or could it be Talia? Rachel Weisz as Talia? I can dig it!

And since I’m speculation, I’ll say that the other female lead -- “the Bruce Wayne love interest” -- will be of the Vicki Vale/Julie Madison/Silver St. Cloud/ mode...maybe.

Exciting stuff and times no doubt!

My only issue with the names mentioned is that of Blake Lively. I just can't see her being a major character in the GREEN LANTERN film franchise and moonlighting in Gotham City. And isn't Natalie Portman in THOR? Anyway...

As BOF reported previously, an announcement is likely coming before the Holiday break and the clock is ticking...

UPDATE: MOVIEHOLE -- which first reported that Nolan was meeting with potential TDKR actresses a few weeks ago -- has thrown a few names into mix: Tanit Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Piper Perabo.

If anyone could pull off a strong female villain it's Nolan, but I'm struggling to think of a film that ever made that happen  :?

Darren Aronofsky confirms a new title for 'Wolverine 2'

Earlier today, I sat down at the W Hotel in Hollywood to talk with Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman about their new film, "Black Swan," and we'll have those conversations here for you in the week before the film opens.

For now, though, there's one tidbit worth passing along from our conversation. When Aronofsky was settling in for the interview, I mentioned to him that I had run into Matty Libatique the other night, and Aronofsky smiled. "I saw that." He offered up one correction to the information that we've run on the film so far, though, and as far as I can tell, this is the first time I've heard this.

The film that he's directing is officially called "The Wolverine," and there won't be a number attached to it. In our interview, he referred to the movie as a "one-off," and he emphasized that the film isn't a sequel in any conventional sense.

It's an interesting move, and it certainly separates this from Gavin Hood's movie, and from the larger "X-Men" franchise in general. Between this film and Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class," it sounds like any rules we've got in mind about these films and what to expect based on the first four films in the franchise are out the window.

Frankly, I like that. Comics have always made room for different artists and writers to take these icons and bend and twist them and try different things with them, so why shouldn't the films be the same way?

We'll have more on "The Wolverine" and "Black Swan" for you soon here on HitFix.

First Green Lantern Movie Footage: What’s Your Take?

This TV promo for a TV promo makes the upcoming Green Lantern movie look like some kind of goofy romantic comedy with some cheesy special effects thrown in. But bear in mind: The short clip was made to promote Tuesday’s episode of Entertainment Tonight, which will show off even more of the movie.

It’s early footage that will undoubtedly get polished prior to the movie’s June 2011 release — and there’s still time for them to kill Ryan Reynolds‘ ridiculous “I know, right?” line when he shows off his CGI superhero suit — but it’s a long way from the dark tone of The Dark Knight, the most successful DC Comics movie ever. It’s also not what you might expect from a production Badass Digest called the “biggest, most epic, most sweeping, most cosmic superhero film yet.”

Still, the lightweight first look isn’t too surprising, since director Martin Campbell is on the record saying the movie will be closer to Iron Man than Batman Begins. “The tone is light,” Campbell told MTV News. “It has a lot of humor, but I think the relationships between all the characters are very real. We try to keep the action very real.” At least Kilowog looks undeniably cool.

I know all the reasons why this needs to be family friendly, and I appreciate what's being said above, but that did seem like they'd jumped over the cheese border :(

Y The Last Man becoming TV show with Louis Leterrier?

Image

Louis Leterrier’s not had much luck at the movies in recent years, with both 2010’s Clash Of The Titans and 2008’s The Incredible Hulk inciting bile and apathy from cinema-goers.

So it’s no surprise that the Frenchman is interested in turning to television for his next big project.

The director has long been linked to an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s exceptional, apocalyptic comic book series Y: The Last Man, but production has been slower than a tortoise on sleeping pills.

“I still want to do it,” Leterrier assures MTV. “I’m passionate about it. But it’s stuck. People don’t know what to do with it. I’d love to do it, but I need people to finance it, and the people financing it don’t know if it’s a TV show a movie, or what it should be.”

Aha, so that’s the delay – should Y: The Last Man follow in the shuffling footsteps of The Walking Dead and take to the small screen instead of the big one? Leterrier’s clearly keener on the former.

“You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don’t need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies.

“Frankly, with HBO and Showtime and cable shows, the DVD box sets and all, you can have a product that doesn’t make you feel like as soon as it’s projected, it’s thrown away. It’s really a piece of art.”

Hear, hear. US TV has long been setting a high standard that Hollywood movies consistently fail to reproduce. If Leterrier wants The Last Man on TV, he’s definitely got our support.

Haven't read any of it, but I hear it's excellent :)

Marvel planning War Machine spin-off

Marvel Studios are gearing up for a massive couple of years, with Thor and Captain America scheduled for 2011, and The Avengers arriving in 2012.

The studio has already announced plans for Iron Man 3 for 2013, and if reports circling Hollywood are to be believed, they are also planning a spin-off for Iron Man sidekick War Machine.

Pajiba are reporting that a pitch has gone out to writers today, and to expect the official announcement to follow shortly.

In the comics, the War Machine is the nickname of a heavily weaponised suit of armour created by Tony Stark, but used by his colleague, Air Force Colonel James 'Rhodey' Rhodes.

Don Cheadle wore the War Machine suit in Iron Man 2 and is expected to reprise his role in The Avengers, so with news of a spin-off it would seem Marvel have the star locked in to a multi-picture deal.

Expect more single character spin-off news as Marvel look to fill their post-Avengers schedule.

Haven't seen IM2 yet...

No BATMAN TV series in development but there should be

I had a brief e-mail chat last week with the most well-respected and accurate Batman movie blogger on the web and he warned me of sites that have no story filtering department and that literally post every scoop that comes there way as if it were gospel. I would mention one of the sites in question but I don’t want to give them any more hits than the obscene amount they have probably already generated from their false story.

So let’s be clear. The story that a Batman t.v. series is in development is false. Now WB might well have tentative plans to bring The Dark Knight to the small screen sometime in the future but the source that this particular site is using, doesn’t know [LIFTED].

Having said all this… a 20 episode series of hour-longs that existed outside of the movies, that would allow DC’s best writers to utilise the whole of Gotham Central and Batman foes both original and classic and obscure, and adapt classic stories like The Long Halloween and Hush would be great.

Batman suits the small screen medium.

Unless it's animated, I can't help thinking that's for the best :?

I think Urban is just too small to be Dredd. He's a colussos if a man - standing tall above all others. I don't think the picture is lit too well, so the helmet's details isn't that obvious.

Disturbia director D.J. Caruso has spoken out about his decision to depart production of comic book adap Y: The Last Man.

Talking at length with Latino Review, the director revealed that he wasn’t happy with New Line’s plans to compact Brian K. Vaughan’s series into just one film, where he had envisioned it as a trilogy.

“I love, love, love that project,” he says. “I think the biggest problem for me was I saw it as a trilogy. I didn't think that you could take Yorick's story and put it in to a two-hour movie and do it justice.”

The director goes on to add: “It's a tough screenplay to lick and we had some very good writers. But it was like you had to convince the studio that this movie could stand alone on its own. But at the same time there would be unresolved issues ultimately with what happens to Yorick and how it all ties together.”

If things changed in the future, though, Caruso would consider returning to the project.

“It's really tough. If someone came back to me today and said they would love for me to jump in and do this the way I wanted to do it, I would,” he says. “But I just feel like it's too much for one screenplay. I'm not involved with that now.”

Could this mean the project will default to Louis Letterier, who's keen to turn the project into a TV series? Watch this space.

I'd be astounded if that ever became a TV show, frankly...

Superman plot rumours emerge

And is Anne Hathaway in line for Lois Lane?

Image

New rumours about Zack Snyder’s Superman: The Man of Steel have emerged.

According to What's Playing, The Man of Steel will focus on Supermans’s early days, and will feature him becoming involved with a struggle between two tribes in Africa.

He then returns to Smallville to learn about his origins after he uses his powers to help settle the dispute.

With David Goyer (The Dark Knight) as screenwriter and Christopher Nolan producing, The Man of Steel is expected to repeat the success of the pair's Batman reboot.

Though we're in early days, this ‘returning to his roots’ plot sounds a bit familiar. Almost as if it’s been a TV show…

Another tidbit chruned up by the rumour mill is Anne Hathawayto play Lois Lane, although you'd imagine pretty much any age-appropriate actress is in with a shot.

Superman: Man of Steel is set for late 2012.

If the chemistry isn't there between Supes and Lois, she might as well be written out, so get it right this time!

The Dark Knight Rises will be last Batman film for Christian Bale (maybe)

Christian Bale has announced that The Dark Knight Rises will mark his last time in the cowl and cape... as far as he knows.

'I believe, unless Chris (Nolan) says different, this will be the last time I'm playing Batman.'

Director Christopher Nolan is currently prepping the comic book threequel, which is due to begin filming next year.

Dismissing any rumours or speculation of continuing the series, Bale said he wouldn't believe anything unless it comes from Nolan himself.

"Until Chris tells me, I don't believe it," Bale says. "It's gotta be from his mouth, or else I don't really know.'

The actor, who is currently promoting new film The Fighter, for which he is already attracting Oscar buzz, also claimed to have very little info on the plot of TDKR.

He told MTV News;

'Chris will let me know what I need to know when I need to know it. I probably know a little bit more than some other people out there, but I think most people would be surprised at how little I do know.'

"It just hasn't been necessary yet. I know he'll give me plenty of time to prepare for whatever I need to, and I'll discover it.'

'He's a pretty damn good filmmaker. I trust that he's going to come up with something wonderful.'

The Fighter is out in UK cinemas February 4 2011.

The Dark Knight Rises is set for July 20 2012.
