Frustratingly, in the NHS, what appears to happen (particularly in management): a person who is competent at their job gets promoted and moves upwards. They continue to go up the greasy pole until they get to a position where they are inadequate and incompetent. They are then left at that stage rather than demoted to the previous position where they were competent.

It's a well known phenomenon and not confined to the public sector. Have a look for 'The Peter Principle'.

Has anyone ever had a manager where the ego was justified? I certainly haven't.

I've had one exceptional manager, but she also didn't have much if anything of an ego (especially considering she was American). That was the first company I worked at that I actually truly wanted to work for, rather than just for the wage packet.

There's a lady that manages support for Discovery that's based in US and is American. Not only does she work 24/7 (she sleeps from 12-5am) and looks after her family but she's one to the nicest and most helpful people I've ever met.

No matter what time of day you emailed her she always replied asap. Still in touch with her now I've left.

Lol.

The company that makes all the figures I buy, NECA, does some brilliant Godzillas from down the years.

A minor one – but replaced SWMBO hard drive in her lappy with an SSD - a nice boost in speed so that should keep her happy for a bit

Scotland 27 - Ireland 22 :D

The second half fight back from Ireland nearly killed me.
