Not really. It's no longer the case that you're liable for any fraudulent purchases made on your card before you notify the issuer. IIRC you're now liable for only the first £50 of any total of fraudulent purchases provided you notify the issuer within a reasonable period of time and even then they tend to waive that £50 excess. The only thing wrong about this is it will obviously take them a day longer to get your replacement card to you, which might be a pain.

Its a FAIL on their part - They will loose (or increase the chase of loosing) more money through fraud. I will not be liable for any of the loss

As a matter or interest, was it the number on the back of your card you called (the international nbr) or from your statement? I've caled Amex in the past using the number on the back of the card and it was 24hour assistance from anywhere. IIRC the normal customer service number (from the statement) is the one which adheres to holidays etc.

AMEX have a 24 hour number for members, They must have put you through to the wrong department. Still a fail though.

It turns out that as use used the IVR system and went to the disputed transaction team (which given that it was) is the reason we were told by the recording that they were shut. If we had just held on then we would have got hold of someone to talk to.

It turns up it has been compromised - they will close their account and issue us with new cards / numbers and take off the offending transaction. We think it might have been done when we hired a car in Ireland

Interestingly the person at Amex said that lots of people get this confused - so maybe they should amaned their recordings ? :?

Yes amazingly. The problem that they had was that they charged merchants too much to use their cards.

My sister-in-law phoned a taxi company to complain that her taxi hadn't arrived.
Turned out she'd forgotten to book it in the first place.

A "Fail" would have been a Labour vote. Technically a Lib vote was a joint win.

Amex used to be one of my customers. I programmed their IVR

I should point out, that was nearly 20 years ago and I really hope they're not using the same 286 server
