Interesting.
If the BBC comes up with a pay service to watch the show, I expect official viewership numbers to tumble.
People that are already paying for Netflix aren't going to want to pay for another service to to view one show.

I would assume it would give access to BBC Worldwide content in its entirety rather than just be for Doctor Who, but yes - having to pay for yet another subscription service for access to a few shows would seem to be a winner. Now, if they did some sort of a deal with Netflix and/or Amazon to carry the content that might work better.

So, would it still be a requirement to pay for the to licence if you are subscribed to this streaming service?

Rumours are the Capaldi will be leaving at the same time. I rather hope not - I think he’s brought things to the Doctor that we were denied when Eccleston left.

As I understand it, you have to pay a license if you own a device capable of receiving a transmitted signal, so yes, you would.

You can sub to a streaming service entirely using devices which are incapable of receiving a broadcast signal, so it isn't necessarily true. There is often talk about including iPlayer in the licence arrangement somehow, but as it stands streaming of itself does not require a licence. I'd expect that to change the next time the licence is renegotiated, which I think is due around 2020?

It still needs to be displayed on something... if you're using an Android box and a monitor it get's a bit shady, but if you're using a TV which has a tuner, and as far as I know, they all do, you will need a license. I think.

BBC iPlayer website says that you need a TV license if you stream something that is currently being broadcast. So, watching BBC1 live on iPlayer requires a TV license. Watching something on catch up doesn’t.

Yes, this is true afaik. If any device in the chain has the capacity to access 'live' television, you need a licence. So if you owned a USB stick tuner for example even if you didn't have a TV as long as you had a laptop you'd need one. You can even get tuners for smartphones or tablets so..

Whole thing needs sorting out, frankly...
