the one iPhone 4 that I have seen in the wild did show the signal problem but only when the others with me demonstrated how to do it. The user had the phone for a week without even noticing it.

Just downloading it now... ...all 580MB of it!!! How can it be that big when it's a minor update to change the signal formula?!

Because that's not what it is. The way the iPhone OS is installed, it's effectively like a disk image. If you change it, you have to download the whole disk image again. There are no 'patches' for iOS, there's just a 'new version of iOS'. That's more or less the point I've been making all along that nobody here seems to understand. It doesn't matter if the iPhone 4 does the 'grip of death' thing when you're making it do it, it matters if it does it when you're not.

Exactly. I demonstrated it for one of the bosses at work on his new iPhone. Had he previously noticed it? No. Has he had any dropped calls? No. He had one call that got slightly 'bitty' but then that could as easily been the other persons connection.

Well, iTunes just bricked my iPhone Extremely annoyed at the moment! I had a "unknown error (21)" so I restarted my MBP like the website said and restarted the phone. When I plugged back in it said something along the lines of "iTunes has recognised an iPhone in recovery mode, restore and update it". Hit the "Restore and Update" button and after less than a minute... "Unknown error (21)".

I had a look but that's for JailBroken phones. It seems I have to use my other Mac to restore it... oh wait... I know, I'll take the SIM out and put it in my old phone... oh wait...

Have you access to a different Mac you can try using?

Nope. The only other one I can get access to is at my Dad's house, an hour's drive away.

Tried a full reset? Hold down the home and on/off switches for about 10 seconds, then you should see the apple logo and the phone will restart.

When I hold down the buttons it just cycles between off, the Apple Logo and the plug in iTunes screen.

Analysis of what the update does. Quite technical, but a summary might be 'nothing has actually changed, but at least now the phone's signal strength meter is something approaching accurate'. Jon
