I can wire in a plug. I can wire in a light bulb. But if there's an appliance not working, how can i test there's power to it? Example - there's a 240v and 120v shaver socket in the bathroom. Could i stick a multimeter probe in each socket to test the voltage drop across it?

Theory tells me if I stick the red probe on a live wire, and the black probe on the black wire, make sure the multimeter is set for 200-600V, I should be able to read the voltage across and check the wire is live. And if I connect the red probe to the end of the live wire, and the black probe on the bit where the live wire connects, I should be able to measure the current.

But I'm a bit worried about electrocuting myself ever since I stuck a lego piece into an electrical socket when i was about 7-8 years old.

To simply test for power, a neon tester on the live connection will suffice, but a meter across red and black will give you the voltage.

I have a neon wand thing. Given that it's 240V, should I be connecting black probe to black/neutral first, before red probe to live? Or doesn't it matter. Somewhere in the back of my head, it tells me not to complete the circuit by making myself the neutral.

On car batteries, maybe, but I've never bothered when testing a mains socket.

Mains is AC rather than DC with negative earth like a car.
Doesn't matter really what order you do it in

I didn't get that on my course, you were just shown how the gearbox worked and told to get on with it. You were expected NOT to fall off.

One good thing about Donald Trump's campaign: it's ruining Jeb Bush's | Trevor Timm | Comment is free | The Guardian

I can't work out the overall Republican campaign at all. Everything about it seems to split their own vote in every way.

Did you fall off? Where did you do it?

I'm seriously considering getting my bike license. I can ride a 50cc currently or a 125 once I do a CBT. I thought I'd start there but it has been quite some time since I rode a bike. I wondered if it might be worth me doing one of the £20 taster sessions before booking the actual CBT.

I didn't fall off!! :)
We did it at Midlands School of Motorcycling in Stratford-upon-Avon, it was a fantastic day and we spent nearly 3 hours out on the road. We did a free taster session beforehand which was invaluable, I'd never been on a bike before and Red had, but a long time ago. On Saturday we worked really well through the exercises and got longer out on the road as a result, we both passed our CBT on the day and even though we got a thorough soaking we had a great time. We're both going to crack on with lessons in the New Year and get our full licenses.

I know someone who in a promotion interview was asked “What would you do if a member of your staff was being disruptive?”, he answered, “I’d take him out side”. To which he was asked “what if the person was a woman?” His answer: “I wouldn’t hit her”.

He got the job.

The madhouse that is work. We have three bosses who don't get on. So they piss each other off, come up with three versions of what work the staff should be doing and when, then blame the staff when it inevitably goes wrong.

So for instance I have two bits of work to do, two bosses at the time, but only one is actually present and telling me to do X. What do they really think happens to the other piece of work? Oh, and since they like a scapegoat as a result of this, I spent five hours in total today doing out a report where they have focused on the last line purely to start an argument tomorrow. In fact a boss left it til five minutes before I left today to email me, deliberately leaving it rolling around in my head now.

One guy is already set to jump ship, and I'm about ready for quitting altogether. Entire weeks are wasted on work that's already been done, frivolous crap with no relevance to supposedly urgent work, justifying every last detail to no benefit whatsoever, you name it.

We had a new guy start recently who nearly left within a few days. Others have been there a week and are already burning out. One girl who only started has badly sliced her hand at home requiring surgery and asked if she could take the time off as annual leave. Nope, that would be too sensible. They'd much rather she went to an HR attendance panel after going sick, or came into a stressful work environment with one arm from miles away on a bus. If she gets so much as a knock she could be permanently disabled.

I've never seen more unethical bastards up close in my life as in this job.

If you do quit, spell out exactly why for HR in your resignation letter.
