Think that's my professionalism gone down the pan. :(

When I did my BSAC (PADI for those of a younger disposition) training part of the course required simulating CPR on yur partner. Mine was a very attractive girl and we were both wearing just swimming cossie's -

[makes note : when doing scuba training wear really baggy shorts]

isn't it standard procedure to.. err.. straddle the person you're giving chest compression to, to make sure you're applying the force correctly?

It's all been done from the side in my time.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Same.

I was also told that in order to apply the "correct amount of force" it's possible to crack a few of the ribs, which is why we didn't practice proper compressions on people. Although i hear that Australia does do so.

A trainer I know says "If you hear a snap, crackle and pop, then stop." Well not stop, but apply less force. Depressing the chest by about 1/3 is the current norm, but ILCOR change the standards when new evidence suggests to do so, and more localised regions have different standards themselves. You only simulate compressions on a healthy individual, practice compressions must be done on a mannequin. Although the standards do change they are only small revisions and in many cases amount to rewording, this is mainly to get more people to be able to respond to someone in need.

Err no it was from th side .. but to "find" the correct place to put your hands we were taught that the hands should cross over slightly with one covering the chest area!

My sister. Although the youngest of the three of us, over the last few years, I've regarded her as the smartest out of the family.

She bought some stuff from ikea. Both sisters worked on a chest of drawers. Thankfully at one point, I decided to be a bit nosey and had a look whilst they were working on it. Spotted a few errors (wooden dowels in wrong place, a few places where metal locking nut things should have been used instead of plastic ones). In an effort to exonerate herself, she decided to work on the rest of the stuff alone. One of them was a small set of metal drawers for filing. Came flatpacked and she unpacked them, put together the frame, folded the sheets of metal to form drawers, placed the end bits on and slotted the drawers in. They wouldn't come back out. She blamed ikea.

Had a quick look this morning and it turns out that she had folded the drawers the wrong way and they were inside out. The only drawer that came out was the bottom one and this was the only one she had folded the right way round. Because of the way the others had been folded, there were folded lips on the edge that caught the frame and wouldn't come out. I had to yank off the front cover of all of the drawers, slide out the runners on one side so the drawers would come out, disassembled and refold the drawers and reassemble them.

If she'd looked at the instructions properly, they were straight forward and she shouldn't have had any problems. The worrying thing is I've said she was the smartest. So either I'm wrong or, more worryingly, I'm right!

Me:
Got fed up of squeeky windscreen wipers, so I bought some new ones.
Didn't make any difference.
£14 down the drain.

In all honesty, I'd probably have done the same, with the difference that I'd have tried cleaning the windscreen first. Then I'd try cleaning the blades.

Also, depending on when the wipers were last replaced, it may have been time to replace them anyway.

Finally, are you sure it's the windscreen/wipers and not the mechanism causing the squeak?

You can see the rubber jumping. I'll give the screen an extra good clean tomorrow.
I've kept the old blades as spares.

There are 42 pages of fail in the meeting place, and only 22 pages of win. Are we just really grumpy?
