Yes - this is why serious questions and thinking would have to be done. I don't plan running into anything blindly, but I at least know someone who would tell me all the extra costs involved. I imagine it could be a lot, depending on boat size, type, mooring etc.. Not to mention the various certificates you need for certain kinds of journeys.

To sail in Britain, you don't have to have any sort of certificates, though some knowledge is essential! I did an RYA Day Skipper course at night school, I would think most local authorities would run them. Very informative and, while some knowledge is useful, you could do it from scratch if you're pretty bright, which you are.

The ins and outs are so in depth that there's no way I can go into them here, but a great place to start is here.

If you want to gain experience, check out your local yacht club, people are always looking for crews.

Yup in the UK nothing stopping you buying a boat and sailing away - no certs required
I sail (and if anyone ever needs crew around the S Coast PM me)
Went to the Southampton Boat Show a couple of weeks back - saw the boat I would like a Discovery 55 - "only" £850K .... now lets see what I can find behind the sofa cushions

I know you can just “get a boat and go” - but you do need certificates if, say, you decided to hop across the Channel to France. If I had a boat, this is the kind of thing I’d love to do with it.

Still pondering, and may decide to revisit this in the spring.

My excuse is that I have amnesia and even if told before will not remember it now. Is that acceptable? ;)

You need no certificates to pop over to France etc. Afterall there is no requirement to carry any such papaerwork (as its not required to have it). I think there might be a requirment if you want to use the french waterways but not for the sea

I have never heard of anyone being asked for any docuemnts (other than normal passport and obviously insurance if they have a prang)

At work, the protocol for dealing with a severely autistic girl, who's a head taller than me and about 5 stone heavier, who's freaked out and is attacking members of the public (the carer's shouted 'RUN!') is to evacuate site and call the Police.

Any mention of the use of tasers or tranquilliser darts? Or is it call the police armed response team?

Jesus Christ she's not an armed terrorist.
Okay, so she's autistic, which means a little care in approaching her, but for crying out loud, tasers?!?

Actually they need a horse.

Turns out the company of horses can help dramatically.

How you'd get a horse into work I don't know.

Well, if you work in a zoo it may be possible...

I do. :)

But we don't have horses.

Lots of space, no distractions, a cup of tea and a sit down, with promises of ice cream while we stay out of sight and listen to her beating herself about the head and chest in between howls. I was more worried about the animals in the enclosure (they're free roaming) approaching out of curiosity, to be honest, as that's my job on a friday.

I will admit to wondering to myself what the quickest way to promoting a state of unconsciousness in her would have been, had I needed to.
I'd kinda planned on a sleeper hold.

I was not being serious. I think that treating autistic people that way is appalling. It is just the way that social services treat people, especially the disabled.

I may have known that before making my seemingly random statement...

Couldn't you just paint a zebra or something? Just in case it's needed in the future?
