Yeah, because women obviously won't go to see films with men in them, and vice versa.

The idea that simply replacing a male character with a female one is somehow 'addressing an untapped market' is stratospheric tosh. There are styles and forms of media which do demonstrate some gender preference but the idea a remake of a film in a very masculine genre (action movies) will somehow appeal more to women simply because it has more female cast members in it... well I just don't know where to start.

if Hollywood wants to attract more women into theatres, they'll have to do a hell of a lot more than this level of lazy tokenism.

I said 'finally starting to pay attention', I didn't say they'd hired someone from The Guardian as a consultant ;)

I'd be the first to agree with you about tokenism (Wonder Woman needs a female director! Black Panther needs a black director! and so on), but these are maybe the first baby steps towards a wider shift too. That's what's been happening in comics for years now, whether sex or sexuality.

And it's not totally Hollywood's fault either - look at Mad Max getting labelled a feminist film just because it had women in it! Though it was a bit of a swindle on the studio's part considering Max wasn't even the star of his own film... Long story short, it's experimentation within very expensive products.

That's not why it was labelled a feminist film. Try again.

Try again? That's my opinion. Unless you're talking about why other people really labelled it a feminist film i.e. it suited them, from social commentary to lazy film reviewing

I think the 'lazy film reviewing' bit is what you've fallen prey too - the presence of women isn't what made it a feminist film (and there's some debate if it is or not regardless).

If any move a studio makes to incorporate women or non-white actors is called 'tokenism' we're not going to get anywhere. The subject and content needs to change. Hollywood is a stale place, partially because it's been run and showcased middle class, middle aged white guys with middle class white guy stories.
I'm not saying I don't enjoy those stories, but maybe we need a little more range of points of view to escape the current banality.

I never said it was a feminist film, so it's not my reviewing ;)

Well nobody is calling 'any' move a studio makes tokenism. However the act of taking an existing property and replacing a male lead character with a female one with the simple idea that will attract a putative female audience IS tokenism. It's practically the definition of it. Based upon the simple (and incorrect) premise that women will go and see films they otherwise wouldn't go near simply if one of the lead characters is a woman rather than a man. Frankly it's not just stupid and wrong, it's bloody insulting.

Quote:

The whole point I was making is you don't attract women to see your film by making the lead a woman, you make it by starting with a premise, story etc that women will actually want to watch.

It's one of the most cut-throatedly capitalist places on earth. They make the films they make because they make the most money from doing so. It's stale because the people running it see risk as a limiter of profit, not because the executives conform to a single demographic. I didn't see the middle-aged white guys having a problem making god knows how many Twilight films that primarily appealed to teenage girls and I can't imagine there's much cultural crossover between Twilight fans and studio chiefs. They do what makes money. Everything else is secondary.

Here's the dilemma : women do not go to cinemas as much as men, or at least that's true in the ages where they have time to go very often - ask your friends with kids how often they get to go to the pictures to see something with a higher than PG certificate... Do Hollywood make less films that appeal to women because less women go which means less women want to go and see the films they make? if you can figure out which end of that loop came first, then congratulations because you're probably going to make a pot load of money soon.

Only if someone can make a business case for it.

The first trailer for Captain America : Civil War has been viewed at the yearly D23 expo.
It's just mobile phone footage at the moment, so you can go looking for it yourselves if you so desire, I can wait until it is officially released to the public.

D23 Expo 2015: Poster Hits for Jon Favreau's 'The Jungle Book' (casting details etc also)

Khannnnnn! Sorry.

Love the voice cast, and I'd no idea they were making Kaa a lady snake this time round. Something tells me the monkeys will be stealing the show again going by the poster.

Sorry folks, I'm playing a little catch-up here ...

From what I understand, there wasn't just Mina Murray who was a female caharacter in the books - I haven't read them so I don't know this first-hand.
Also, Mina was the actual leader of the League, not the Professor as it was in the film (I haven't seen the film since it was released, so details are sketchy).
So what the film actually did was take a book, replace the female lead character with a male, concentrate on the darker side of all the characters it collected together, and then get critically panned in the press and was only a marginal finincial success at the boxoffice.

Remaking an essentially failed version of an adaptation that screwed-up the source material so royally and changing back what the first film altered can't really be such a bad thing, can it?

'Mad Max' News: Furiosa Spinoff In The Works? — Latino-Review.com
http://www.latino-review.com/news/mad-m ... -the-works

Furiosa was only the stronger character in Fury Road because Max himself was a cypher to hang the rest of the film on. So, the real question is whether to put the two of them in the same film again. Unless you've got a story that doesn't feel totally forced, that might not be a good idea. Also, how good is Tom Hardy in the role, really? Honestly, they could replace him and nobody would care. He shouldn't factor too heavily in any decision where it comes to what made the movie popular.
