It seems that TalkTalk is the only viable alternative.
Ouch!

There's a list of broadband deals in the latest edition of Computer Active - EE, Plusnet and TalkTalk in that order are the top three for the first year. According to the page, it's from Ofcom, £30 for the first year...

A short while ago on these very boards I posted that I had been a BT Infinity customer for 2.5 years and I never had any trouble with them.
I moved house at the weekend, and all that has changed now.
They want £130 off me so I can remain a customer with them.
The faceplate on the phone socket in my new place needs upgrading to allow me to plug in the router for my broadband service, and they say that because an engineer visit will be required, I have to pay £130 for this to happen.
*sigh*

I suspect you'll find the £130 is the standard Openreach fee for installing a phone line (or activating one that's been dormant for more than a month or so). It's an enormous pile of wank but any ISP that relies on the BT network is likely to make the same charge. It's certainly worth shopping around to see if you can get it waived but unless you can get Virgin Media be prepared for an extremely irritating answer.

This is why I ended up going with Virgin.

Fed up with London. Fed up with sitting 1.5hrs in smelly dirty public transport everyday. Fed up that working in top global consultancy I can't afford to live anywhere closer than zone 5 because I decided not to go into banking or law but engineering which gets no respect.

I need a new job somewhere else, maybe the valleys.

Have to say, I've always been surprised at how much tolerance there is for travel time on the mainland.

Manchester to Stoke is 1.5 on a very good day. It's usually at least two hours there and two hours home.

The things we do for money... ;)

I used to have 4 hours on a good day, 6 on a bad day and in the summer, on a Friday, around 8.

Now it is around an hour.

The car is probably a write-off. Some pillock rear-ended me on the A34, at high speed, while I was stationary.

Now stuck in a hotel at the services.
