Good game! A few more mistakes than the last Superbowl I watched, but it all added to the drama. I thought the Green Bay quarterback was amazing.

Me too. Even waited to see Rogers' Camaro. Lucky git.

Great game, tons of drama. But I miss watching the Sky coverage when I used to pay Murdoch back in the day.

But what do they mean when they say things like 2nd and 5 or 1st and 10.

I guessed it was the down they were on and the distance moved but that does t make sense for 1st?

Nearly right.

It's the downs used followed by the distance needed to get the next 1st down.

E.g. if it's 1st & 10, the offence still has to move 10 yards to get another first down but they have 4 downs in which to do it. 3rd & 5 means two downs used and 5 yards left to go till the next 1st down.

You may hear 4th & inches - that means that the previous down almost got to 10 yards but was just short. You may also hear 1st & Goal; fairly obviously this means that the ball is less than 10 yards from the goal line and, hence, less than ten yards from a touchdown.

Did this help?

Thanks for that.

Makes a lot more sense that way. I did wonder how they managed to get "3rd and 16"! Obvisouly they've been pushed back 6 yards!

Another quick question. If they are on the "4th and 7" (for example) and the running back breaks loose with the ball and runs 30 yards before being push out of bounds does the offense go back to the 1st down at the point at which the ball went out of play?

I can't really remember but I thought I saw the ball switching sides when this happened?

9 times out of 10 when they hit the fourth down, special teams are brought out and they either attempt a field goal if in range, or will punt to put the receiving team as far back down the field as possible.

However, on any down, regardless of yardage, the line moves to the place where the ball went out of bounds.

Cool, thanks.

Will have to watch more. When is it on TV?

The regular season runs from September to the end of the year, then the playoffs are January, before last night's main event. There is also the Pro Bowl, which is like the NBA All-Star Game for football, with the best individual players picked from each conference and pitted against each other in an exhibition match. I always enjoyed the Pro Bowl, but with Sky Sports, I used to watch A LOT more football.

Five used to show some highlights, but I'm out of touch tbh with what's shown where now...

It is split this year BBC2 had some highlights of the playoffs, though the regular season has been with Channel 4 or Five in the last few years. Sky get the lot but they spread it across all the Sky sports channels.

Something called Outcasts is starting on BBC1 at 21:00 today. Brand new sci-fi drama from the Beeb.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Heard about this on the radio. Sounds interesting.

Also Bedlam is starting (I think on Sky something). That also looks quite good.

In the last few weeks I've finally gotten around to watching The West Wing for the first time; I've just finished watching Season 4 and all I can say is this programme is epic! :D

Anyone else see Outcasts last night?

I had high hopes for this, but it failed to deliver for me on all levels. Considering it comes from the same stable as Spooks, the script was terrible and the acting wooden IMHO. I'll try the second episode tonight, but so far I'm underwhelmed by it. A shame, as it looks like the BBC have spent a fair bit of money on it.

I saw quite a few basic errors that should really not have been missed but am still interested. I'll tune in tonight to see how it develops.

Sadly, yes.

They tried to cram far too much exposition into the first show, it made it very heavy going. That and the fact some of the acting is shocking means I can't even remember the names of half the characters, let alone what they were doing or why they were doing it. Plus it's full of glaring backstory issues. As a simple example - you're the first settlers on a new planet. You are in orbit above the planet, trying to decide where to land and start your first settlement. Do you choose

a) An arid area that's a days hike from the nearest water source, has obvious frequent seismic activity and seems subject to regular dust storms
b) ANYWHERE [LIFTED] ELSE.

Also : Why is there vegetation but no animal life? Why did they even bring guns with them if the only living things on the planet are other human beings? We've invented FTL travel and mind reading devices but apparently handheld 2 way radios are now the size they were in the 1970s? What? A lethal disease that puts a halo above your head? What? WHAT?

It's just full of huge glaring technical anomalies. If the acting and story were good, they could hide those facts or make you care enough about it to overlook them but it isn't so they stick out like a compound fracture. Plus the whole idea that it's kind of 'The Wild West in space' is utterly awful. Plus I can't decide which is going to be worse - Hermione Norris's character's daughter surviving in which case we'll likely have TWO unfeasibly badly written child characters in the show, or the fact she'll have been burnt to a crisp and Norris will spend the next 7 episodes moping around and badly over-emoting.

but the worst moment - the abject nadir of the whole thing - was a what, six year old? boy 'spontaneously' quoting William Blake. I mean, WTF?

Amy Manson is hawt but the rest of it is a complete washout.

Jon

I was half watching it last night. In other words I started watching it but got bored very quickly, and was easily distracted by anything else. i.e. making a cuppa, teasing the dog and fiddling with my phone.

After about 30 minutes, it failed to hold any interest at all and I switched to the recording of Sunday's Top Gear Albanian Gangsta Fiasco.

Not a great start to a new series.
