Yeah, it's a weird angle they're taking with him (there's a line in the trailer that's totally outside of previous canon). I've a feeling he might be a partial leftover from when the Turtles were to be aliens...

I thought the entire concept of alien turtles was just silly - it ignored the comic book origins. The other question I have is how does Splinter exist, presuming he's not a remnant from an attempt to make hero rats?

As with Secret Service, the source material's pretty weak. In this case think Kick-Ass mixed with Pacific Rim, neither of which were exactly brilliant IMO. Millar has been coasting in the main for a long time now, though it's possible he just has too many projects on the go. It's all just a coincidence that they're mostly pre-formed movie storyboards
