So, STAR WARS... What Happens Now? http://www.aintitcool.com/node/59382I'd be interested to know what you folks would like/think will happen, even if it's just a choice of director

As a friend of a friend just pointed out: "Look at what happened to Star Trek after Paramount gave Roddenbery less control, it was a crappy little film called Wrath of Khan. Don't knock it till you see it."

But that's [LIFTED], coz Roddenbery's vision was epic. I'm concerned that Disney is fracking massive. But like some of you, I'm looking at Avengers as a great example of what can happen. Fact is, like Kevin Smith and many here, I'll be in line for Ep 7 and if I walk out of that feeling like I did after Avengers, I'll be all for it. Until then, not sure what to think. Of course, either way, I'll be watching 8 and 9 too

Not to play down his role, but Roddenberry's vision was Wagon Train in space. It wasn't until other people got involved that it became the brilliant universe we have now. He died in '91, and arguably the best work in the Star Trek universe has happened after that. Disney gets the Star Wars story, they've more or less been telling it themselves for years. Actually, the more I think about it, the gladder I am it's being taken out of the hands of Lucas.

This. I'm quite incredulous at some of the reaction 'No, no! Disney will ruin Star wars!'. Yeah, because old fatneck has been such a careful guardian over the last 30 years hasn't he... Jon

Oh, really? Deep Space Nine. Voyager. Enterprise. Not to mention some fairly questionable films: Generations, Insurrection and Nemesis? I would add the Undiscovered Country to that list too, though Roddenbury was still alive when that be was made. Apparently he died shortly after seeing it. Star Trek was also based on an atheist footing - science always came up over religion in TOS and TNG. Once Roddenbury had died, more spiritual and religious nonsense started creeping in - you had the unexplained "prophets" in DS9 (Kirk would have found out who they were AND kicked their butts for being arrogant). There was all that Native American tat in Voyager which seemed s out of place that they had to record some special ethnic-flute music every time Chakotay got out his medicine bag. Yes, the Vulcans tended to be somewhat spiritual, but that was always tempered with their logic and scientific learnings. They even started talking about currency in later series. In Roddenbury's universe, money just did not exist (see the episode of TNG where they defrost people for. The 20th century), and people did what they did because they wanted to. Trek was founded solely on a communist and atheist principles. I'd say that Star Trek took a serious blow to these principle after Roddenbury died, and until someone goes back to the original goals and aims of the franchise, and takes a long hard look at the political and economic backdrops of the what I would argue were the best manifestations of the franchise (TOS and early TNG), it is destined to remain just another space bound soap opera.

Gauging the success of a science fiction franchise solely from a science vs. religion aspect is, personally, an unusual way of critiquing it, but fine. DS9 - I thought it was good. In fact, the approach I felt they took with the whole 'prophets' thing was more or less 'Oh look, the locals are worshipping some inter-dimensional alien beings. Cute, we'll let them get on with that.' Voyager - I'm not a fan, but again, the faith based aspects were there as a foil for the story line. Something to hang an ethnicity on. The thing is, in TOS the universe is a tiny place. Once we develop that universe, are we to expect that notions like money and religion magically don't appear elsewhere in the universe? And once the various species start to integrate with the Starfleet universe, you're going to rub up on those issues. Or what's the alternative? A ship full of people fly about doing science, and if you want to join in, you can leave your identity at the door, pull on a red sweater and pray you make it past the next episode. Sounds a bit like the Borg... Actually, I think TNG and DS9 rather mirrored our political and economic realities quite well. Certainly slipped comment on numerous societal issues right under your nose when there wasn't much else trying to. I think you've been a bit mean dismissing the wider ST universe out of hand; sticking a Communist science team in a spaceship can only stay interesting for so long.
