even with the horrid 50mm F1.4 lens I got its still awkward
Then, at the risk of offending, it's something you're doing wrong - unless your camera/lens has a fault.
I was playing with a Canon 450 today (Edds old camera) and I was using a 50mm f/1.8 and without the use of the internal flash I got the shot I wanted using indoor lighting.
Just try experimenting. In situations that aren't important you should have enough time to take stock of your settings and alter them accordingly.
That way you'll know what situations require what settings when a time comes that you need to do it properly.

That's what Geekette did with a few shots in a dimly lit bar when we were at the wedding.
I did all I could to get a usable images from the massively underexposed results.
You can see them for yourself on my Flickr.

I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. It's an amazing piece of plastic! Do Nikon do an equivalent? Maybe respond in HK's 50mm thread to keep this one clear?

Really nice pictures. I like the way the slightly blurry background draws attention to the main object in the pictures, (the car).

Were they taken in B&W or Photoshopped? I'm guessing that, (due to the background objects being slightly blurry) they wouldn't look as good in colour?

Those were taken on B&W film. There's more from that day in my Flickr set here. I shot on 4 different stocks that day. :)

Here's a bad photo taken on my 'phone through a non-opening window at my "London office".

An internets to anyone who can tell me where I work. I bet at least one person has seen this exact view before
