In June 2005, Steve Jobs stood on stage at WWDC and announced that Apple would be transitioning from PPC processors to Intel. Developers sat up, took notice and started making version of their software that would work on both platforms. To help the transition along, Apple introduced the Rosetta layer that converted PPC code to Intel code on the fly. Rosetta was abandoned in Mac OSX 10.7, which came out in July 2011.

I mention this timeline because over at Fuji, they were clearly not paying attention. The Mac software that shipped with their Real 3D W1 stereoscopic camera was PPC only. This camera was launched in 2009, which means that Fuji will have had 4 years to move their development platform to producing Intel compatible software.

The W3 model of the camera (there was no W2) was released in 2010 - by then all new Macs were Intel only, and the architecture had been established. No PPC Macs had been sold for a couple of years, and it should have been obvious that at some piont the Rosetta layer would have been deemed obsolete. Indeed, with Mac OSX 10.6, you had to download it to install it. There’s your warning flag right there.

So, the software that comes with the W3 is PPC only - so it will not run on modern Macs. Further more, Fuji do not offer an Intel build of the app on their site. I mention this because I have just bought a W3, and the other day I was going to look at the software that came with it. Not even the installers run.

Actually, the software supplied is immaterial. I can do what I want with the camera and use software I already have to process the files. The fail here is that Fuji just have not been observant enough to make their software useable for those people with Macs.

Why in Coke's name did I update the apps on my tablet after all this time? It's taking bloody ages for probably little benefit

I know the Windows Vista was a bit of a fail anyway but it would seem that MS are trying to forget it ever happened, well as far as Windows Phone 8 goes.
Don't get me wrong, you can indeed plug the phone into a Vista PC and pootle about in Windows Explorer on the device (once Vista has downloaded some drivers) but MS have decided that they won't actually let you use the WP desktop app on Vista. You can download it, at which point it tells you to get .NET framework 4 before it will install. If you install .NET framework 4 the WP app installer then decides it won't install on server OS's. What server OS? This is Vista Home Premium.

I know Apple is often criticised for the speed at which they drop support for older versions of the OS but MS seem to be doing an impressive job of replicating that with Vista. Odd considering how similar the underpinnings are with Win 7.

While we're on the topic of Vista support, I have to give a special mention to Adobe Reader.
You can get Reader XI for XP sp3, Win 7 and Win 8 but not for Vista (which tops out at Reader X). I'd dearly love for someone to explain that little gem to me. I know Vista didn't exactly set the world on fire in the corporate world (which is presumably why XP sp 3 is still being supported in the latest version of Reader), but seriously, how hard would it have been to let the poor souls stuck on Vista to get Reader XI?

For Vista you used to use Zune with WP7, does that still work with Windows 8?

As far as I can tell the Zune software only works with WP7.

Lea Michelle's 'heartfelt' fake-crying speech is one of the most distressing things I've ever heard, for all the wrong reasons.

She's an actress whose only job is to appear in a TV for which 'emotionally manipulative melodrama' is virtually the mission statement for every scene. The last thing she's had an practice at is dignified and refined.

It's not particularly HER performance, just so many people who seem to be saying how genuine and heartfelt and "touching" it was.

Either there are so many people who think that THAT is what true human emotion is.

Or there are so many people acting their way through this life and jumping on the mass hysteria of grief because their lives are THAT empty and superficial.

Trapped in such a world, a world of forced smiles and Liza Minnelli tears, I think I would turn to drugs too.

I'm struggling to see what it is that's bothering you about it.
What were you expecting to see?

Well, I think you've got a young actress who's other half killed himself.
Then you're on stage getting an award.
On the one hand, it's a reminder he's not with us any more, but on the other it's a celebration of the work you did.
Was she meant to be an inconsolable jibbering wreck or just come out on stage, throw a peace sign and a 'thanks y'all! it's super awesome!'?
It's a fairly singular experience that she's going through and people react differently.

It is exactly what Michelle Williams went through when Heath Ledger died.

Loss of a loved one is not uncommon.
Having to accept an award in front of a television audience is.
The combination of the two even more so.

I'm not a fan of the show, or of her work, or the nature of her personal relationships. I simply don't care enough to pay attention. So I'm happy to accept that seeing a young woman being given an award for work she completed with a now deceased boyfriend might well be a bit of a mix of emotions.
