Didn't Cromwell try to do that in the 17th century?

The problem was everyone ignored him and carried on anyway.

That was never going to win him a popularity contest ! :D

Heh. Then again, digging him up after he died and executing him seems a bit OTT with hindsight.

I would like to see more, cheaper and more reliable train services so I can get home quickly and cheaply.
Doesn't seem to be heading in that direction much though.

A limit on the times that pensioners are allowed out to do shopping (i.e. not during lunchtimes or at the weekend).

If the shops are doing badly enough then sales can start in December so it's really up to the consumer to hold their nerve until the shops crack. Doesn't look like thats going to happen this year though. Plus, shopping in the January sales is as bad or even worse than the pre-Christmas crush anyway.

The only thing I'd change is to have no shops open on Boxing Day like it used to be and no ads on telly before 1st December. When my wife worked at Debenhams and had to go in on Boxing Day it was a real pain for both of us.

I would change the fact that Christmas "stuff" and Christmas music seems to start in October, or even September in some shops. There should be industry "guidance" stating that it should only go out after the first Monday in December.

Councils should be banned from putting Christmas decorations up too early. Councils who then don't put up decorations or have rubbish ones should be named and shamed.

The phrases "Winterval", "Winter celebrations" and "Happy Holidays" should be banned from public use. It's Christmas so you should say so.

People who are not essential workers should not have to work on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day. In fact large stores etc should be banned from opening on these days. I predict this will do wonders for family relations.

I'm sure I'll think of more later, but that'll do for now.

OAP curfews. Now that is a cracking idea.

No no no, can of worms mate - then tbf you'd be obliged to deal with the d1ckheads that stop right in front of you in the city centre, the chuggers (charity muggers), the credit card and mobile phone people, people with trolleys and buggys (sometimes both)...

The local economy would probably collapse  ;)

A fair point, well made.

Still...

I've grown to really dislike the rampant commercialism of it all. It begins far too early in the year, normally before the autumn has kicked in. Everyone feels so pressured into spending money they don't really have in order to buy presents no-one really needs and food that won't get eaten, all for a couple of days around the winter solstice.

My old dad used to say to me: "Money doesn't buy you happiness."
