Thanks for all the advice folks. My new lodger arrived last night. He's a 9 year old ginger cat called Fred, who is the spitting image of the cat from Shrek.

His owner bought a load of stuff round so I've got everything he needs. Seems he's got a rather nervous disposition so he's not likely to roam and is very much an indoor cat anyway but we'll see how things go. I've set up his bits & pieces in my spare bedroom and he spent the whole evening in and around there - one of the things that's spooked him a little was the house he was living in was all carpeted whereas mine isn't and he doesn't seem very confident about going up and down a varnished wooden staircase. I'm sure he'll get used to it.

So, we'll see how things go. The plan apparently is I'm looking after him until January when a friend of the owner whose very much a cat person is moving nearby and if necessary will give him a more cat-friendly home. Who knows, maybe by then we'll have got to know each other and I'll want to keep him :).

Once again, thanks for all the advice. I hope you guys don't mind if I bounce this thread should anything come up that I can't figure out on my own.

Jon

He'll probably take a while to settle in, shout if you have any questions :)

I'm no cat expert, but wouldn't shouting scare him? I've also been told that if you want to stop the cat from running away when you put it in the garden, you could try tying it in a sack and pegging it to the washing line... ;) :P   :etc:

I wouldn't try that if I were you...

Can't say that I have, I think the conversation was something to do with what different cultures use as avatars regarding souls (We go off on some weird tangents. Which obviously suits me ;) ), somebody thought the Egyptians believed that cats carried the souls of the dead or somesuch...

Actually, anyone know off-hand where the whole Egyptian/cat thing comes from? :?

It comes from an amalgamation and subsequent evolution of previous memes.

Just thought I'd mention the question of insurance and whether your cat has any.

Last Saturday my cat managed to cut open her paw on something sharp (no idea what) and cleverly managed to cut through the superficial tendons. The resulting vet's bill (including a Saturday 'call-out') came to £265, plus there are follow up appointments, etc. Fortunately I can claim all this back as a bill of that size at the moment is not what I need!

It may be worth just checking if the cat is already insured.

That's something I've really been thinking about, my cat is a bit of a spanner.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.

I have considered this actually. However I don't know if the cat is already insured with it's owner and even if so if that insurance is valid if the cat is staying with me rather than her. Given the premium cost I may well just decide to do it anyway. Are they likely to ask detailed questions about the cat's medical history, or are these policies fairly 'blanket'?

Jon

My cat is insured with Petplan who were recommended by the vet. Have a look here, you can download a pdf of their Terms and Conditions. There are plenty of other companies that insure pets....I think even Tesco do it. They do require that you tell them about previous illnesses. There's more info on the FAQ page and I'd guess that all policies would be very similar.

Just to underline the need for insurance; my cat had a bad reaction to antibiotics given as part of her recovery and stopped eating and drinking and vomiting up what little she did get down. Subsequent treatment has added a further £300 to the earlier bill reaching a grand total of nearly £600 in little over a week! If we didn't have insurance we would be looking at selling a kidney to raise the money....or rather my other half would ;)
