Looks like a standard ego kit you got John. Always a good start.

I'd run with that for a bit before considering any more upgrades.

Well, inspired by this thread, and noticing that my consumption of the evil weed has been increasing of late, I've just bought a The One kit online.

There was a podcast on Radio 4 about the lack of regulations over e-cigarettes.

You do have to be a savvy shopper with it but as a whole it's safe

Looks like a standard ego then. Good starting point, remember you'll need to replace the clearomiser every so often & give it a clean every couple of fills.

What are the health implications for these things? Both for the smoker and those around who don’t smoke? It’s hard to find a balanced answer to this because all the vaper outlets are saying “no problems - you can even cape around kids” (but they would do as they want to sell them) and it seems that the more balanced opinions are in the “we don’t know” partly because there aren’t enough studies on the subject.

I am wondering how many vapers need to be in a room before the vapour they exhale reaches a certain level to make it harmful or unpleasant to non smokers/vapers. I say “unpleasant” because even if there are lower chances of carcinogens being present, there is also the chance that unabsorbed nicotine (as well as other substances) are present, and personally I’d rather not inhale those.

I really don’t see why these are necessary anyway. Surely the tobacco/nicotine fix can be obtained in other more personal ways which don’t affect others around?

As a non smoker I only knew that they existed, but saw my first one in Asda last week. The person was using it in store. It made me wonder about how they worked. I agree that patches are probably a better option particularly for those around you. There has been little testing. Though health wise for smokers they are much safer, but probably no better than patches.

Health-wise they're a lot better. There's usually only 4 ingredients in e-juice rather than over 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke which cause cancer.
That said you could look at them as 99% safe rather than 100% safe (as they contain nicotine).

The amount of nicotine in exhaled vape is negligible, carcinogens shouldn't exist as nothing is burnt (the liquid is just heated).
It's a similar mixture (more or less the same mixture but with Nicotine added) as smoke machines in disco's etc.

Compounds measured in first 38 ml sample of e-cigarette mist.

Compound - Mean - Units
1,3-butadiene not detected Ppm
Acetaldehyde 0.34 Ppm
Acetone 0.16 Ppm
Acrolein not detected Ppm
Acrylonitrile not detected Ppm
Benzene not detected Ppm
Ethanol 100 Ppm
Ethylene glycol not detected Ppm
Ethylene oxide not detected Ppm
Formaldehyde 0.25 Ppm
Hydrogen cyanide
not detected Ppm
Cresol 0.16 Ppm
Xylene 0.18 Ppm
Nicotine not detected Ppm
Propylene glycol 32 Ppm
Propylene oxide not detected Ppm
Styrene 0.29 Ppm [/code]

Note: The limit of detection was 0.01 ppm and the limit of quantification was 0.025 ppm
for this analysis.

Another study is found at http://www.e-cig.org/2010/01/13/scienti ... nic-tsnas/

So, hugely preferable to cigarette smoke, but not as good as fresh clean Alpine air?

As I don’t go near discos, I wouldn’t know the effect of smoke machines they use on me. I did go to Anthony Gormley’s Blind Light exhibition. Part of that was a large glass room filled with a smoke-like vapour. There were warnings that people with breathing conditions such as asthma should not go in. Being asthmatic, I played that one safe.

I do go to steam railways, but those tend to be outdoors ;-)

I do note from this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic ... h_concerns) that the base solution is that used in asthma inhalers, which shouldn’t be a surprise, really.

Yup, the base ingredient (PG) is used in medicines & in it's pure form (not mixed to make e-juice) can be safely injected in to the bloodstream.

I use the smoke machine line as they've been tested to be safe for long exposure (people who work in nightclubs etc).

They do seem to be a much healthier alternative for both the vaper & everyone around them
