There were some good cars in the 80's but, good or bad, nearly all were rust buckets built when our car industry was at it's worst. We also had to put with these gems: Allegro, Montego, Marina, TR7, Princess, Chevette
Need I go on?

So, the 80s are the only decade to produce bad cars? Really? Every car in decades prior to or after are somehow great? There's bad cars and good cars in any era. I suspect that given another few years, the cream of the decade will become apparent.

Oi! I'll not have a bad word said against the Chuvit. My first car was a Chevette L two-door saloon, and it wasn't all that bad. Okay, it was a bit basic, but it went along, had a fair old acceleration, and was rear wheel drive.

And heated rear windows to keep your hands warm when you were pushing it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

It did, but you are referring to my mother's Skoda Estelle... I don't recall my Chevette ever actually breaking down. It even fired up first time after being in deep freeze for three months over the winter of 1986-87.

That represents everything wrong with cars in general. Mine was no better. A B-reg Renault 5. Horrid thing. Even the Renault garage hated it.

Where did I say the eighties was the only decade to produce bad cars?

Just felt as if there was an implication, given the theme of this thread, that somehow cars produced in other decades are inexplicably 'better' for not being in the 80s.

My first car was a "Shove-it" too. It was shocking in almost every way, but I loved it. It quickly died and was replaced by a £50 Chrysler Alpine (bought from a mate), that sounded like it ran on coal but got me to Scotland and back a few times. Over the years I've had three 80s Vauxhall Cavaliers - all China Blue - two 1.6L and a 1.8 GLSi saloon, which is one of my favourite cars - sooooo easy to work on. It was eventually destroyed by a b@stard uninsured driver.

Skoda's have improved immeasurably since then. At least it would have kept your mum fit pushing it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

I've had a couple of Estelles. One was actually very reliable. It took me to university and back for about five years, and many other places. It had its moments but from what I can gather nothing worse than any other car of that age and vintage. The second was a problem - a rod connecting the gear stick to the gear box kept breaking, which meant it kept getting stuck in a high gear. I was able to swap it for a Favorit which kept me going for a few years

My managers, when I worked at the local garage had a Chuvit HSR, with 5 speed box and offset 1st. That was a nice car.
