NOOOOOOOOO..... Travel lodges are aweful these days. White isolation boxes with no character in the rooms what so ever. If you must take the budget route, Permier Inn rooms are much nicer for almost the same money.

Whenever we go to London, about twice a year at the moment, we always book a very central hotel, usually through LastMinute. It’s cheaper to stay further out, but when you allow for the cost of travel plus the time wasted travelling, then I think it’s worth the extra expense. If you’re based in the Oxford Street/Regent Street area, then you can pretty much walk to most places, which is much the best way of getting around. Especially if the purpose of the trip is to see London.

Yep, sounds like what I was planning to do.

Thanks everybody, having a look at links provided and sifting out some of the better ones.

Right, I've just RSVP'd a wedding up in Lahndahn, about the first weekend in October.
Wedding's in Chelsea.
I'm wondering - do I travel up Friday night, stay all day Saturday and head back Sunday, or... travel up Saturday morning (service is at midday, so just about doable) and head back Sunday?
Or just go up in the morning, come back in the evening? Which'd be a shame in some ways as I'd like a bit of a break to see friends.

Any thoughts? Cheap hotel suggestions?

Obviously money comes into it, but given my vast experience of weddings, I'd say stay both nights. You will not enjoy the evening if you go home that evening, which kind of renders the whole thing pointless and you'll miss a twelve o' clock wedding if you leave from devon at anything less than stupid o'clock that leaves you too knackered to enjoy the day.

If you still have friends that can put you up in London, use them to save money.

Yeah that's my thinking too. I think I can probably swing a return train ticket for less than £50 if I book this week.
The hotel for two nights seems to be a bit trickier.
Given that the couple marrying are both now teetotal, I'm not sure if bringing my unique brand of drunken chaos to the reception is A.) Possible and B.) Welcome.
Oh, and I've never met the groom, but I'm sure I don't like him.
So I might want to move on somewhere else. ;)

The whole thing sounds to me like not worth bothering with other than a trip to London to see the people you really want to see. I say that as an alcky who can't imagine going to what sounds like a dry wedding...

Just re-read the thread, see if caz's offer of garden space for a tent is still going. You're welcome to stay at mine, but as you know, I live in Dorset. Reckon I could force my brother to let you stay at his if the worst comes to the worst. He does owe me after writing sarah's car off!

I'll probably have a room free if you need one.
I'm in Kingston but it's easy to get to town.
Gives us a chance for a post uni beer on the Friday.

People on this forum are awesome. Fact.

As an aside Prof, have you thought about the sleeper on Friday night? It leaves Redruth at 2200ish and stops for ages in Plymouth, but if you could get to Plymouth or Exeter, you could sleep on the train for a few hours and be in Paddington for 0530ish. Cheap and saves you a night. Jus' sayin'.
