It can go either way that. The first year they did it I got some quite good stuff. As far as I remember, last year I didn't actually download a single thing.

Avios are having a sale if you have lots of those. Cheap flights to the USA, if that is of interest to you. I could get 5 flights to New York with what I have already. 8-)

Better to use them to upgrade on flights than buy tyhem outright as you still have to pay taxes on the flght and the fare is only about £150 from UK to USA, world traveller to WT+ is 0.5x avios and you don't pay the additional taxes

I am planning a trip to Houston at some point and was actually planning on use the flight as a way earn another 12046 avios, though will have to look into it a bit more.

Book your flight in 2 legs, Wherever - Dublin then Dublin - Houston

You can clear customs in advance in Dublin and save at least £300 PP usually , even if it just means you go Dublin - Heathrow first!

Also it's additional air miles and tier points if you're a BA Exec member

I've been looking at booking through ITA Matrix (ran by google) and I can get a fudged return journey going Newcastle to San Francisco then back from Vegas (World Traveller +) via Dublin each way for less than a return to Los Angeles from Heathrow on economy both ways (lax is cheaper to fly into/from but far less convenient for what I have planned)

Yes that is looking cheaper. £520 via Heathrow with BA, £441 via Dublin with BA but £118 from Gatwick to Dublin with BA

I can get a much cheaper flight with Ryanair but will hit their luggage restrictions particularly on the way back. I was planning to do some shopping while there and might get a bag or two of things. Since I will need to get a better estimate of the weight of the luggage because what might be deal might not when the additional luggage is included.
