That said it is a little black dress which is a staple of many girls wardrobes.

According to the handydandy online solver tool, you can't solve that to 999, 1000 is the closest.

Maybe it's a flaw in the system, only 3 digits, goes for the nearest.

I didn't think there was a system. Thought it was purely a random number?

Well, not random as such. I'd imagine the algorithm goes something like 'take N numbers from the set available (where N is between 2 and the size of the set) and apply N simple mathematical transformations (e.g. plus minus multiply divide) to those numbers. if the result is more than three digits, start again'. Either that or it's some bloke behind the screen with a piece of paper making it up as he goes along. Jon

I'm pretty sure it's just a random number. There isn't always a solution.

Given that there are only six numbers it would be quite simple to have a system where a series of "random" numbers are stored and, depending on which numbers are selected, (from the limited range on the table) someone in an office looks it up on a chart and enters the number into a PC...

Course not all numbers are available. For example, there isn't a '34' card. Apparently there are the digits 1-10, 25, 50,75 and 100. That means the number of combinations is still quite large but significantly less than 'pick any six two digit numbers'.

Hang on a minute...
Which "system" are we talking about?
The system that produces the target number on the TV for Countdown? or... The system that prof mentioned that tries to solve the problem?
I was talking about the countdown thing. i.e. there is no check when producing the number to ensure that there is always a solution. It is just random.

I can get 504...
9 x ((8 - 2) + 5 x 10) = 504
then I've got the spare 9
Can't get any closer though.
